Performance TIPS and tricks thread...

Having just built a new system, i proactively looked for ways to improve my system and generally make use of the ram, 4 cores, drive, graphics card, etc.

I don't think every one knows these things, so was wondering whether we should compile a tips/faq thread for the computer section.

For instance, on vista

- To use all your CPU cores from start up
Run msconfig from Start>Run...
In the [Boot] tab, advanced options, tick 'Number of processors' and then set your number of cores.
I've cut my boot time into Vista 64 by half :)

I have loads more at home I will post later

(if it's not implicit, please add your obscure tips for vista/xp and osx ;) )

other tips I've found helpful:

Don't waste money buying expensive binoculars. Simply stand next to the object you wish to view.

Always poo at work. Not only will you save money on toilet paper, but you'll also be getting paid for it.

Weight watchers. Avoid that devilish temptation to nibble at a chocolate bar in the cupboard or fridge by not buying the f**king thing in the first place, you fat ba$tard.

Recreate the fun of a visit to a public swimming pool in your home by filling the bath with cold water, adding two bottles of bleach, then urinating into it, before jumping in.

Anorexics. When your knees become fatter than your legs, start eating cake again.

An empty aluminium cigar tube filled with angry wasps makes an inexpensive vibrator.

Save money by reading this thread instead of buying viz ;)

Do you still need to disable Qos packeting on windows xp or was it patched sp2 onwards.

From the run command, enter gpedit.msc and hit return. Locate the Qos Packeting service and enable it, then set it to reserve 0% bandwidth.

VIZ top tips - give your computer that much needed boost during windows start up....

1.from START, click RUN then type MSCONFIG
2.goto the STARTUP tab and untick anything that shouldn't be there

(either that or buy a pair solid state hard drives and stripe them)

VIZ top tips - increase your uTorrent download performance by using a static IP address

1. set your computer to a static IP address
2. ascertain the port number your torrent client is using
3. go into your router's / firewall's config menu, and set "port forwarding" for that port to your computers static IP address.

(you'll find your porn arrives so much quicker that way)

make money from your irritating friends and family who constantly bombard you for advice on fixing their crappy computers (typically eMachines with no Windows CD) by secretly buying a £1 per minute 0845 number and telling them its your new telephone number.

do a fresh install of your chosen operating system but never connect to the internet or install any programs.
You will find your system is very fast indeed, although limited in what can be done.
Using the above suggestion, you will find miesweeper runs slightly quicker :D
