turbo muncher

My car seems to enjoy the taste of turbos for some reason.

it ate its standard td04 then ate a vf22 and now appears to have eaten its way through a supposedly bullet proof td05 20g.

anyone any ideas as to why this could keep happening?

All oil lines to and from the turbo are good without blockages, could i just be unlucky :(

the vf22 ran 1.4 bar then got smokey

the 20g ran 1.5 bar then got smokey

whats happening ahhhhh

can someone please shed some light on this for me.

thanks
Jamie

How long are they lasting?

scoobysmiff 18 July 2008 06:36 PM

when was the last time you had a new oil pump mate, have you got an oil pressure gauge so you can see what oil pressure you are running?
I have also read about a small gauze filter that sits in the oil way from the head and causes turbos to destroy themselves due to lack of oil, check the oil way from the head mate and see if there is anything in there?

j16jrf 19 July 2008 12:09 AM

will do, yeah have an oil pressuer guage and all is good on it.

i will check the feed lines to the turbo when i get it off and make sure its all ok on there
the turbo's arent lasting too long lol.

TD04 was apparently new when i got the car but prob out of a scrappers and not a good turbo to start with.

vf22 was bought second hand off here so dont know the history of it.

20G was bought with good history but car was runing new ecu with antilag and no dump valve so maybe took it to an early grave ?

Looks like you may just be having bad luck with second hand turbo's tbh. The only way you will really know is to fit a new turbo, and switch the antilag off.

j16jrf 19 July 2008 01:53 AM

that makes it sound like the antilag is always on lol.

it did get a bit of use being shown off for the novelty factor when i got it, but i would doubt the amount of use it got would harm the turbo, but then again who knows.

The VF22's are quite frail from what I have heard. Have you changed the oil feed banjo when going from VF>TD or vice versa??

This is a very good point, the banjo bolts do have a different size apperture i believe, so you would need to use the correct one, the TD series is slightly larger iirc?

j16jrf 19 July 2008 09:17 PM

used the one you supplied with the turbo ian ;)

scoobysmiff 20 July 2008 10:37 AM

then that will be ok as it was a TD one mate ;)

j16jrf 21 July 2008 10:26 AM

;)

ok so check this one out for WEIRD.

took the car out yesterday since the "diagnosis" and all was well.

can ran perfectly and boosted up to 1.5 bar as required. Weird.

Now what im thinkin is that the guys doing the EVC fitting had the battery disconnected and the car must take a while to resest and learn the boost setting again?

so all appears to be good again.

Would disconnecting the battery cause this to happen? even with the autronic ecu in?

WEIRD haha

hhh1234 21 July 2008 04:49 PM

two words, anti-lag, lol

u aint got much luck with turbos, tdo6 next

j16jrf 21 July 2008 08:48 PM

read the post mate its working again lol was just the battery being disconnected i think it needed to reset itself

Tidgy 22 July 2008 05:13 PM

simple, anitlag kills turbos. wont make any difference the condition of the turbo new or second hand if you run the anitlag on it. i know a chap who had a brand spanking new turbo at the cost of £1200, lasted 2 weeks untill it was fecked cos of antilag.

on the road its not worth having, get rid of it and your turbos will last longer

j16jrf 23 July 2008 09:42 AM

the turbo is working antilag has not killed it
