rear nearside wheel rumble

cheers for looking, my problem i got is that i have an intermittent rattle/rumble noise coming from rear nearside wheel and tends to happen on rough roads on my03 sti i had someone look at it and said it was my brake pads rattling so i swapped over the pads from one side to another just to check and the noise is still there so this rules out pads rattling and my suspension is brand new and have had this checked out and all is ok,when i took off the wheel today and left it in gear with the handbreak off i was able to turn the wheel all the way round but not able to do it on the offside wheel, should this be able to happen ? and is this the start of my rear diff ready to fail or a gearbox problem. cheers.
