oil seal on crank!!

Hi, just had my car serviced last week, since then I've been getting a burning oil smell - the guy said the oil seal was damp, but wasn't dripping out. didn't have this problem before I took it in, but he said maybe the the fact that it's got more oil in now it might be causing it to leak!?!? Anyways, just wanted to know how big a job is it to change the seal, and do I need to change the belt?? thanks in advance!!

Just to add, he said it's about a 4 - 5 hour job!! Anyone ever had this done??

Depends which seal it is ? Cam or crank seals are fairly easy to change,it's best to fit a new cambelt while you have it off.

How much does he want to charge for doing ? Had mine done last year with a cambelt change and cost me around £250 iirc and that was from a well known Subaru specialist.

I wouldn't pay someone to do it done now though as it's a fairly simple job for anyone with a reasonable mechanical knowledge ;)

oil seals are pretty cheap to replace, not sure about labour.

Just realised the title states it's the crank seal, sorry :brickwall

If it's the front crank seal then it's fairly simple to replace depending on your level of mechanical knowledge.

If it's the rear crank seal then it's either a gearbox out or engine out job - can be done either way.
