which of these tyres would you buy and why

toyo proxes t1R £65.70
nankang NS1 £50.40
Falken ZIEX ZE-912 £51.70
Falken FK 452 £61.80
Federal SS 595 £56.30

Cream 05 July 2008 10:41 PM

I've just bought a set of FK452, why.
seemed to be getting good reviews for a budget tyre.
Tyres rated at 'Y' which is 186MPH so I'm guessing that will be plenty for a scooby :)

Wulsey 05 July 2008 10:57 PM

Toyos all the way mate!

They are a great all round tyre for the money!:)

reiddo 06 July 2008 07:02 AM

I used to have Federal SS 595's on my scoob and the stopping distance was rubbish. I'm a great believer in tyres are the most important thing on your car, so I changed them for a set of mitchelin Exalto's and wow, grippy as hell and the stopping distance reduced by a substantial amount. Pay the extra and get good tyres mate. Will be the best thing you can do to your car. I love the acceleration of my scoob, I now love slamming on the anchors just as much! Just need to check the mirrors before I do... lol

If you still want to go with budget tyres i'd choose the toyos on your list. I didn't realise toyos were so cheap :thumb:

Mark'sWRX 06 July 2008 04:02 PM

1st choice would be Toyo because lots of people like them.

2nd choice Falkens as they seem to do well for a budget tyre (I beleive PSLewis swears by them).

Federal are not known to be great and I agree with reiddo that it's worth having decent tyres. If you drive a scoob you don't want Fiestas overtaking you in the wet.

I wouldn't touch Nankangs at any price. I've heard lots of bad reports and I had them on a hot hatch years ago and they gave zero grip in the wet.

172sport 06 July 2008 04:36 PM

The side wall stiffness on the Federal's is crap, i managed to rub all the writing off the front passenger side.

mellinator 06 July 2008 04:40 PM

Toyo everytime pal

172sport 06 July 2008 07:00 PM

YOKO Parada spec 2

RB5#219 06 July 2008 08:19 PM

pirelli p-zero asimmetrico

toyo's

goodyear eagles

end of the day tyres keep you on the road and you should think of yourself and others not your wallet :lol1:

tho i like the look of the yoko's but never had them :thumb:

madforcars321 06 July 2008 09:10 PM

are these prices for 17s they sound cheap if they are

F1 CJE UK 06 July 2008 10:40 PM

YOKO Parada spec 2 aRE DAM GOOD, had them fitted by RCM with some other bits and they seem very very good. deep water is the only area that goodyears are better at but every other condition then YP spec 2 are the way 2 go

stigaz 06 July 2008 11:12 PM

prices are for 17's from mytyres.co.uk.
I was planning on getting the toyo's because I'v heard alot of people here use them, just thought I would ask about the other options after looking in mytyres ,think I'll go for the toyo's as a safe bet

not getting them right away looking for a set of alloys aswell, been thinking about KEI Racing RSS in gunmetal

so keep posting your opinions

cheers

Vederstein. Have two sets of these. Fantastic in the wet.

lovinmescoob 07 July 2008 08:11 AM

Eagle F1's for me, brilliant tyre!!!

Buy the best you can afford mate, it's the only part of the car that touches the road as has already been said.

rooferman 07 July 2008 08:53 AM

Steer clear of Nankang.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

moff1888 07 July 2008 01:07 PM

Ive just stuck Toyo T1-Rs on mine and they are great. Got mine off Fleabay with no delivery charge.

Steve_PPP 07 July 2008 06:12 PM

go for the Toyo's at that price.

i'll agree the above as well, i had 17" Nankangs on my last car (they came on the alloys when i got them :brickwall ). they were properly rubbish!

harvey 08 July 2008 12:04 PM

Vederstein. Have two sets of these. Fantastic in the wet.
One set is Giugiaro, 205 55 16 on 371 bhp STi 3 Wagon. The other set is Sessanta 225 45 17 on UK STi Prodrive 320 bhp.
The WRX Wagon and STi 6 Wagon are on Goodyear Eagle F1. Both 215 40 17
Previously I had good service from goodyear NCT. 205 50 16 on WRX.
I have also had Toyo T1R and T1S which were OK but only OK as were Yokohama and Bridgestone.
Also ran,Firestone, Avon, Pirreli, Uniroyal, Federal and worst of the lot were Khumo. You could slide very easily at speed in tight corners and you needed your wits about you, even at reduced speeds in the rain.

joekont 08 July 2008 01:06 PM

I always put FK452's on mine.
A great tyre that hangs on right to the edge then just starts to slip. Not let go.
I'd like to try the toyo Proxes but don't believe they can be that much better.

Don't waste you money on the federals or nankang. You'll only be taking them off once they've scared the bejesus out of you!

stigaz 10 July 2008 09:37 PM

if i had the money i would go for the eagle f1 but at £360 for 4 against £260 for 4 toyos ....hmmm, it is only an extra £100:wonder:

does anyone know how many miles you get from the eagle f1 ,falken fk452 and toyo t1r

I dont think the eagles last very long and along with the extra cost to buy

gtijames 10 July 2008 10:46 PM

toyos dont last very long in my experience the tread feels softer than the f1s i now have. the f1s are a great tyre but i would be interested inthe falkens as ive heard good things about them.
