Gearbox grinds when shifting hard- shortshifter? oil? or syncros?

Hi,

I'm scobby-dumb. I just bought 02 WRX 10000KM but don't drive it because I can't drive stick- yet anyways. Although my boyfriend has and says that the gearbox is grinding when he shifts fast and hard (worst from 1-2 and 2-3 but sometimes all gear) ... It seems fine when he does it slow and carefully. We do have a short shifter in there as well as sythentic oil (I think it's synthetic- whatever the stuff people are saying is bad..) is in the car as well.

So, my question- Will the problem go away once we switch it back to the stock shifter? Or is the problem the oil and once that is changed will the problem go away? Or is it worse case scenerio and I need to have the syncros changed? And if it is the 3rd case, how much does something like that cost? (I'm in Vancouver Canada...)

Help is appriciated! Thanks!
