Boost Problem 1.6 bar

I have a my97 sti v3 and the engine check light is on the dash, the car seems to fuel cut at 4500rpm. I hooked a boost gauge up to the car last night and it's peaking at 1.6 bar on a standard car surely this isn't right?

The car has no boost controllers or bleed valves, alsomade sure the actuator arm was moving freely and its ok.

I checked the codes on the ecu and it's showing 24 and 33. 24 is idle control solenoid and 33 is vehicle speed sensor.

I replaced the idle control solenoid, replaced the boost control solenoid andalso replaced the maf sensor and the fault is still occuring.

Has anyone ever experianced this before or know what I should be looking for?

Yep I had it on an my98,

Replace the vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox. It shows the idle control fault as a symptom of the Vehicle speed sensor failing.

I got one from a breakers for a few quid, replaced mine with that one, ecu reset and solved problem. Never touched the Idle control solenoid.

Def speed sensor!!!

Will that cause the 1.6 bar of boost?

strapper 03 July 2008 04:45 PM

Am I right in saying there is a speed sensor in the gearbox and behind the clocks in the dash?

hmmyip 03 July 2008 04:48 PM

hmm no wouldnt have thought so but could do indirectly as it becomes a sort of Lauch control.

I have an 02 sti now that I have 2 stage rev limiting on and that builds boost whilst stood still at 5000 rpm, but not 1.6 bar.

I would fix the vss 1st, reset ecu see if cel comes back on then troubleshoot the next code.

Doing it in steps, easier to troubleshoot.

no speed sensor is on gearbox rhs, you will have a convertor behind your clocks, dont know topo much about them as I have only ever had UK cars

strapper 03 July 2008 09:21 PM

the car hasn't been converted to mph and if it had a converter it wouldn't be behind the clocks it would be in the engine bay as it's a cable driven speedo.
I am more than certain that code 24 is coming up because of 33 but bloody hell 1.6 bar on a standard car! I am starting to think the diaphram in the actuator could be burst?

speedo cable is in three parts on a import classic .well is on mine and its a 95 .

1st bit into gearbox is cable
2nd is convertor
3 is behind dash i think

replaced both 1 and 2 but never three so not sure that is 100% true ,but deffo true for 1 and 2

take it out the gearbox and if ya can get all four wheels in the air see if gearbox side is spinning .if it is try the cable side and so on and so forth till ya find where it isnt spinning any more

yeah must admit 1.6bar sounds high, but then again mine is standard v7 sti UK PPP and is producing 1.5 bar so it could be right........ someone with more knowledge on standard boost pressures should be able to tell us.

Never thought about the cable set up on the older classics, I had a my96 years ago and just forgot all about it.

I had a similar experience with my MY97 STi. It kept spiking and hitting fuel cut and in the end I lost confidence and interest in the car - it was downright lethal at times:(
Had it checked over many times and everytime I was told that the problem was cured and then it would go and do the same thing again:rolleyes:
In the end it was resolved when I added a Blitz DSBC set eventually at 1.25bar (started at 1.0bar and squeaked it up whilst checking AFR, etc). May have cost me a few quid but transformed the car and my confidence in it - never looked back and ran up 30k happy miles before part-exchanging;) - not that it really counts for much but it made 300bhp on the rollers with this set up and never lit beyond green on the AFR meter.

My my97wrx used to do this when the boost control solenoid needed cleaning.

possibly the vaccum hoses could be split?
