Fitting a front strut brace???
 

As above,can you just remove the nuts on the top of the strut and bolt it straight on? Or can i expect something to go bump if i do that?

Just been following the detailed instructions above and i've run into a couple of problems......

Firstly, i find i have an alarm sounder in the way which is bracketed onto the bulkhead between the intercooler and the wing. So i thought i'd just put on the brace brackets for now, then bolt the brace in tomorrow after i'd checked on moving the sounder.

Then whilst putting the brackets on, i find that i have two ridges in the bodywork either side, one in front and one behind the strut mounting bolts, so when i put on the bracket, it rests front and back on the ridges, then bends down into the gaps between them as the nuts get tighter. This makes the brackets bend quite a bit, so i removed them and decided to check on here just in case.

So, my two questions are:

Can i just extend the wire for the sounder via chopblock or connectors or am i better to replace it with a longer piece, and can i do either when the alarm is disarmed or do i need to reset it or anything? (autowatch alarm)

Am i ok just to bend the brackets on top of those two ridges, or do i need to use spacers etc? (sti carbon brace into a 98 uk turbo)

are you trying to fit a newage strut brace to a classic ?? Front strut braces are really the equivalent of "plug and play"

Tried to fit a front strut on my hawkeye and it wouldn't fit. Aircon pipe was in the way. Would have meant dropping or bending the pipe, which just wasn't worth it IMO. Took it back as not as plug and play as you might believe.

Was told it was off a GC8, and that corresponds with pics i've seen.....

The bolt holes line up, but the brace bracket sit on top of the two parallel ridges you can see in front and behind the mount. So when i tighten it up, the bracket gets squished down in between the two lines bending it.

One thick washer per bolt, under the brace and it's sorted....

must be soft metal on the strut brace as those ridges are only sealent arent they ?

As above: washers. It was what I was advised when I nearly bought one...but they didn't have one in my MY.

Thought that would be the case..... was just gonna slap it on as first instructed, but decided to check with the people that know before i butchered by new pride and joy lol

Seemed a bit pointless bending it into position, the flex from that would surely have defied the point in adding the brace in the first place.

Any advice on the alarm repositioning before i set it off and irritate the neighbours (even more than i do already by coming home at midnight then leaving for work at 7am lol) ?

Thats what I thought its just sealant, get a sharp flat blade screw driver and gently tap it off where the bracket sits. :thumb:

No, don't do this, you'll break the paint seal, water will get under it and it will RUST:eek:

The same number, (a couple), of washers under EACH bolt head is the best idea, spread the load equally;) Use stainless ones: they can be had from any bolt and nut stockists for pennies each, and the stockists can be found on Yell.com the UK's local business search engine - search for United Kingdom businesses
