Backwards scoop ???

Hi guys,

Was up in Dumfries at the weekend competeing in the Scottish rally. Whilst on a road section to another stage i saw a stickered up blob sti. But i had to do a double take...its scoop was mounted on back-to-front ! it looked bloody rediculous.

Has anybody seen this anywhere else ?? more importantly what effect would it have on the engine (loss of power ?):wonder:

Probably had a front mount intercooler so the scoop will be reversed to help pull the air through the engine bay.

It didnt have a FMIC, thats what i thought the only reason could be. But nowt there... Its obvioulsy been done for a reason but i cant for the life of me think why ??

Sure the fmic wasn't painted black?

minty 01 July 2008 06:44 PM

it will be to pull the air through, RCM have one on the Gobstopper amoungs others.

joekont 01 July 2008 07:54 PM

I was thinking about doing about that....

rallymad_homer 01 July 2008 08:28 PM

Well, bugger me....

The gobstoppers looks alot better than this one did. I mean the bloke had just turned the scoop thru 180 deg and put it back on.

Thanks for clearing that one up guys...

Was it this Milsport

Im thinking about getting the one the gobstopper has as i have a fmic till then ive just taken the bonnet scoop out

rallymad_homer 01 July 2008 10:09 PM

might have been, it was driving the other way... I personally think it just looks odd.

I've heard that the reverse scoop can direct hot air onto your screen, causing it to mist up.

HT04 02 July 2008 11:23 AM

ive heard that this is a good thing to do when fitting a front mount intercooler. so that the hot air escapes or else under bonnet tempuratures could get HOT HOT HOT.

i dont like it myself tho.

mit, yep it can steam the window, mate did it to his, admitedly running 500bhp, 2 years ago :o, and it did indeed steam up the window lol.

reversing the airflow in the engine bay, instead of in the bonnet out the bottom, to in the underside, out the bonnet will make a huge difference to engine bay temps

I have not done this but in isolation I am pretty sure it is a bad idea. Subaru have designed the engine bay to flow air in at the front, over the engine and down the transmission tunnel. The forward facing scoop assists that process, directing air down the transmission tunnel.
A reversed scoop is in a low pressure area and will therefore try to extract airflow. This may well disrupt under bonnet airflow and increase underbonnet temperatures just as removing the plates under the bonnet grills causes underbonnet temperatures to run hotter, contrary to expectation.

my money's on it being a sport with a scoop.

if it's a turbo then interested to know how the intercoolers gets it's airflow :D

Keep an eye in General for threads like "my turbo has overheated, anyone know why? oh, by the way, anyone like what I've done to my scoop". :D

I have the vent type on my track car with FMIC, and the heat haze that come out of the vent is incredible.

I would prefer all this heat to come out of the bonnet and over the top of the car rather than going down around the gearbox, possibly heating that casing up too.

If your stopped in the pits, or in traffic on a road car, there's no airflow into a normal scoop, but the vent will allow under bonnet heat to rise up and out of the engine bay.:thumb:

Sport owner with a sense of humour ? :lol1:

Chargespeed do one half the price of the RCMS vent, I think I need one !
