Flooring troubles SOS
 

OK so with mum coming home, and not being able to walk the way she could, the professionals have recommended sorting the flooring out.

Now we have great floorboards, but old, and need cleaning and re staining/varnishing. OR Laminate flooring.
Reasoning for the options, the dog, nightmare with carpet vs his coat.

Does anyone know how much floorboard sanding and sorting costs, or better still does anyone do this?
I have a load of laminate flooring I bought for the kitchen but could not finish it :confused: cos I was crap at it.

I'm sure a belt sander could be hired at a reasonable price, just make sure all nails are knocked in well to avoid damaging the belt.

Was your laminate the clip together stuff?

Yeah the laminate is clip together, got some underlay for it too.
Its not that I cant do it, I have done a complete other room. Its just an old house, with uneven floors, and lots of ins and outs, im just rubbish at cutting the pieces to fit.

As for the sanding, there is no way in hell I can do it myself lol.
Its the same story with the gardens, might just have a lot of friends round with hired tools, get some pizza's or a BBQ going and just get it done :)

It's been a while since I did laminate. May be worth taking a look in DIY formore tips. I'll see what I can dig up when I get back from the Doc's. It's time to get that form filled in ;)

lol honestly mate, I dont think I will be doing this project myself, just not got the energy to do it to be honest.

The kitchen is 18ft x 13ft....

Sadly our floorboards were beyond sanding due to some creative plumber way back when and some rot to boot. Ripped the old up and put new T&G down from Wickes. Nice solid pine boards, think it was about £14 for a pack of 4 and about £30 to hire the porter nailer for the weekend.

It'd be easier in the short term to get your Mum a 'walker' for support when walking around the house if she's not as sure footed as she was.

Then call in the flooring guys to sort out properly.

Mine are in good nick, just dirty and would look far better cleaned up, and made smooth. Like I say the house is old, like about 115 years old, so god knows how old the boards are.

Just dont trust myself cleaning them or sanding them myself.

I think in the long run sanding/cleaning is gonna be cheaper than laminate flooring, and real too lol..

Yeah I agree mate, but at the same time, I dont want any heavy sanding etc going on with her here, the dust will play hell with her COPD :(

As well as that of course, she refuses to use a walker lol. Pain in the arse that.
For now I think I will just take the carpets out, and continue my quest to get the boards done asap.

those boards are too good to cover up, do you actually need to do much to them? if you are looking to clean them its possible to do it without going the whole belt sander route. What are you trying to achieve?

Then its pay to get it done now really isn't it if you don't want to tackle sanding yourself. :thumb:

Going laminate when you have those floorboards is just wrong. :nono:

lol cheers guys :) My sentiments exactly. Maybe they just need a bit of a refinish, and a few nails, I will have to get a mate with a hammer round to try :)

The hallway is the same. A little grubbier. But same quality.

Trying to achieve an equal finish all over, and safe to walk on without shoes or slippers :) Oh and something thats ok and will survive a few spills.

Mine's not even two years old and I'm constantly thinking about improvements! :eek:

lol the quality of modern day builders eh. :p

This place needs a LOT of tlc, but wanna get the important bits done first. i.e make it safe for mum, then start thinking about what next.

10 and 11ft ceilings dont help either lol HOW much wallpaper!

I will get the carpets up today, and see what there is to do after that.
