I don't see it as getting old.I see classics as a way of getting out of a pretty bland,boring,everyone has an Audi A4 kind of market.Can't get excited about modern cars just lately

i looked into getting a old 1982 ish porker but was put off by tales of people saying they are no good as a daily driver

Loved every minute of it. Even managed 30mpg.


Stop start traffic was my only gripe as my left leg got tired after a constant 30 mins of pushing the clutch pedal (old cable version, MY97 had hydraulic). And the engine does stall easily as it has a very light flywheel - especially when cold or it gets abit hot and bothered on a hot day.

Other issue was the antique Dunlop D40s where well scrubbed in, which made it tramline like a, err, tram. And the steering weight up horrensously on mini-roundabouts with a full tank of fuel (90litres plus 10 reserve).

A new pair of SP9000s on the front transformed it in to perfectly weighted non-PAS joy.


Biggest issue is age and finding a good'un; At the time, according to the local Evans Halshaw techs it was the best driving old 911s they had in to work on; all the others were sloppy, rattly bags of poo, and that was ten years ago! I can believe it too; After what was spent replacing all the bushes, geometry tweeks, brakes etc. ;)

Yes mate...I dont think your getting old either...you just learn to appreciate other motors too. I've gone from subaru's to bmw's now. I'm only 21...and now I see myself having a good look at my neighbours TR6! lol.

Aren't these built on a sherpa van chassis? I've got the Top Gear top 20 worst cars ever made and the MGB comes in at a stonking no 3. The VW Beetle came in at number 1 and look how many people drive those piles of crap and think they are cool!

Each to their own I suppose.

Fiat is nice but I like the idea of the MGB being cheap, even for a nice one, 6k gets you something very well turned out, plys the spares are cheap and more readily available than a lot of modern stuff. Ok they arent fast but so what, nice gruff engine note, rwd and I suppose you can always tune it, the V8 version is no worse in terms of MPG which shows how poor the 1.8 is.

I always thought they were classic for those with no imagination but the Chrome bumper one is such a pretty shape without being efete, its a blerks car !

Get a Triumph Stag. V8, soft and hard tops and it's called a Stag. Now that's a blerks car.

Yes, I do like the Stag, I remember getting trouser stirrings as a kid at a hotel in Torquay when there was an Azure Blue Stag in teh car park, might as well have been a Ferrari.

They are quite a bit dearer, more complicated and more of a cruiser than an MG, in reality I wont do anything this year, I need to see how much I use mine now I am cycling and the possibly swap it for an MG (or similar), I am averaging 30 miles a week in my Saab, trouble is I get a car allowance so I dont know how a 30 odd year old car would go down at work but then again, we do have the Galaxy, my other problem is the lack of a garage so it would have to live outside all year, I suppose most did when they were new but they rusted for fun, I suppose they arent that expensive or rare tha even if it rusts or wears out its that much of a problem, my Saab will depreciate faster.

It also depends whether I can get away with a 2 seater or a barely (GT) 4 seater, the kids rarely go in mine, would just need to arrange it so we always use that for family journeys.

So, its a possiblity, not that bothered about performance figures now, my old Golf GTI was more fun than my Saab and it had half the power, if I use the car for work its seven miles each way, I dont really get to use 250 bhp.

Modern cars are pretty souless, I miss the smells you get from an old car, the noises, its just whether I can put up with the general crapness that comes with it, no abs, no aircon, no leccy windows, ropey handling, not starting on cold mornings, rust, greasing things, additives, water and oil leaks, mot terror, thinking electronic ignition is very modern, respect is due from 70 year old blokes, real ale, beards, tweedy caps.

A F*ck it, going to get one.

Yes, love the TR6, still seems quite modern and agressive even now, again, bit pricey for me.

TR5 or 6 over MGB anyday

124 spiders are rock bottom price wise with decent cars from £2k. £5k will buy you a corker and with a few £££'s left over to get 40's and decent wheels........I will have one soon !
(Second thoughts ignore the 124 I don't want the market to hot up !)

We've got the 'family bus'(X trail),which is the main car and an MX for fun(have to admit,wanted some reliability for the 2 seater:o ).Works perfectly for us.

Shame you haven't got a garage though.I love spending my evenings faffing about on the car in my garage.

Loz, have got a garge but its full of toilets, washers, push bikes etc !

Would love a double garage to faff in though, 1930's house though, one garage was decadent back then
