Tesco 99 any good?

I've been using Esso Supreme 97 Ron so far as there's a garage next to where I work but I recently noticed a Shell garage nearby too so I thought I'd try some of the much hyped Shell Vpower.

unfortunately, this turned into an epic quest to find some Super unleaded anywhere:wonder:

The Shell garage had ran out of Vpower on all 8 of its pumps!! As there are no more Shell garages in the Aylesbury area I thought I'd stop off at Tesco and get some '99 Ron. When I arrived there, they didn't sell 99 Ron, which I was surprised by.

My car was already well below empty at this point and it was probably running on fumes so I had to find a garage soon. On my way through the town I passed a BP garage, but I've heard Imprezas run really badly on BP Ultimate so I had no choice but to carry on to the next Tesco!

Finally, this Tesco had some 99 Ron, so I filled up the car on that. Do Imprezas run well on this fuel? As Shell Vpower is far too difficult to get hold of, it looks like my only choice is Tesco 99.

I hope it's good stuff!

Ved 23 June 2008 06:46 PM

I have no problems with it. Pulls nicely and is a million miles away from 95RON. Probably no real difference to BP or Shell but if it saves you money and doesnt blow your car up it's fine with me! It'll take 4 or 5 tanks worth to flush the old stuff out so make you mind up in a while.

Tesco 99 any good?

Probably the very best fuel on the UK market for Subaru Impreza's. :)

myblackwrx 23 June 2008 06:57 PM

For your car 97 is fine but i run my early import on 99 and it's fine.
The only fuel to avoid is BP ultimate imo.

tbh speak to any impreza mapper as to what think is good.

SirFozzalot 23 June 2008 07:06 PM

Mine loves Tesco 99.

Hardly use anything else now, may use Shell V-Power occasionally, but mainly Tesco 99. :thumb:

T1000 23 June 2008 07:06 PM

Thanks for the replies, am glad my efforts weren't wasted then in switching from Esso Supreme 97 to Tesco 99. I figured I might as well try the Tesco stuff, as it's cheaper than Esso Supreme yet 2 Ron higher.

Mine hasn't been remapped - yet.. but I'd be interested to see if mappers think it's good fuel.

All I do know is, when I ran it on 95 Ron once it ran like a sack of spuds

mervil 23 June 2008 07:18 PM

I've used Tesco 99 since I returned from Germany 2 years ago and my Scoob loves it :D plus you get clubcard points too :thumb: Bonus!!

Clarkie172 23 June 2008 07:30 PM

I have not had chance to try it yet I always use V power. All I know is that it runs fine on that!

scooby-tc 23 June 2008 07:37 PM

I always use Tesco 99,V-power is my 2nd choice fuel.Never had any problems whatsoever with tesco its certainly no worse than V-power

bighead 23 June 2008 08:31 PM

V-power is best then tesco 99

Only the small Tesco in Aylesbury has 99RON, the big Tesco doesn't. Odd I know but there you go. The closest Shell garage is the one heading out towards Amersham. Sky high prices though.

Tesco 99RON is great. Done mega miles on it. Runs really well.

That's right, you're obviously from Aylesbury too :thumb:
Although the nearest Shell garage to Aylesbury is probably the one I went to earlier in Thame.

I've got no idea why Vpower is sold out on every pump, still I'm not going to start relying on getting Vpower if Tesco 99 will do the same job :)

Does it really take that long!!!!

I've had my Scooby 'PPP' for just over a week now, It's had a tank of Shell and a tank of Tescos '99' but before I got the car it was just run on any old 95 fuel. The car goes like stink anyway but do I have better to come :norty: :norty:

JPF 24 June 2008 12:58 AM

Tesco 99 all the way!! my Turbo 2000 loves it, starting to cost in Cambridge now tho:( so trying Tesco normal for a bit and so fare car runs fine, long trip to Wales on Friday so should be a good test to see any difference.

wrx,sti 24 June 2008 07:52 AM

I use tesco 99 in mine and recently i had my car mapped and was told tesco 99 and vpower are more or less the same for bhp

When I had my P1 mapped by Andy F he said that if you took 2 cars to him for mapping, one with v-power and the other with tesco 99 he wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the 2 or which car was filled with what fuel so must be good stuff for him to say that.

fattb 24 June 2008 10:11 AM

I have been using V-power for the last 16 months or so i do 300miles a week on my commute + whatever on the w/e, Switched to the Tesco's stuff recently due to the lack of V-power and after a few tanks i think my car pulls a wee bit better (probably in my head) only down side is 20 miles less per tank

T1000 24 June 2008 10:37 AM

I'll run it on Tesco 99 for a while and hopefully I'll get on well with it. Seems like very positive feedback for it too.

I'll have it rolling roaded later on in the year to see if there's much of a difference in power too, or if it's just the Placebo effect :-)

This is a known downside to Tesco 99 Probably something to do with the calorific value. Tends to cancel out the price advantage.

Tesco 99 for me also. I'm boycotting Shell from now on, I'd rather put Sainsburys super in than give my hard earned cash to those to$$ers .

Check out petrolprices.com for the best petrol prices in your area or else where in the country. Its free to registar and has been invaluable for me.

Wolfie.

T1000 24 June 2008 12:03 PM

cheers Wolfie, yep am subscribed to petrol prices. I found that they didn't give enough options where to get petrol from though so they weren't much use to me.

By the way, what octane is Sainsbury's Super?

I'm surprised that Tesco 99 gives 20 miles less per tank but I am prepared to sacrifice the extra 20 miles. I heard that part of Tesco 99's composition is bio-ethanol or something. Maybe that's something to do with it too

P1 NUT 24 June 2008 12:14 PM

Thats interesting

+Doc+ 24 June 2008 12:29 PM

Always used Tesco 99, get about 130 miles to 30 quids worth, obviously this figure is ever decreasing with the stupid price hikes.

97 i think

JPF 24 June 2008 02:02 PM

Got 300 miles out of a tank of Tesco 99 was amazed, though have to admit most the tank went on motorway driving, the worst I've had is abt 198 and that was with sainsburys and boy my car didn't like that stuff!.

Thevoicewithin 24 June 2008 03:42 PM

I only put Tesco 99 in mine.

Gutted that my Local Tesco is changing to an Esso FFS:rolleyes:

There is a Shell not a million miles away from me but it`s miles more expensive than Tesco 99:cry:

Can`t cry about it too much as the car seems to be freeing up quite a bit latley and feels a bit quicker than it was.
