aaaaarrrrhhhhggg!

Got back from USA this morning, got MY01 wheels, got tyres, got to it the wheels, problem.

Problem is that the wheel nut won't fit into the hole on the MY01 wheel.

the wheel seems to have some kind of metal 'collar' in the bolt holes, and the diameter of this collar is causing a problem.

So, can I remove these 'colars' if so how?

are there really different types of wheel nuts? the current nuts I have are exactly the same as the ones supplied with the MY01 wheels.

help! I really wanted these wheels fitted for tomorrows sussex meet.

here's a pic of the bolt that is supplied with the wheels, and is exactly the same as the bolts on the current wheels. Can anyone confirm if they have the same or different bolts? (MY01 owners and Dyney type people!)

Is the hole diameter too small ? If it is could you drill the size out slightly?

yup, hole of the 'collar' is too small.

I'm not confident to drill it out, plus can't see why this should be the case as the bolts were supplied with the wheels, so should fit

BTW - if anyone has any nuts that are not like the one pictured then please feel free to bring them along. I'd need a total of 16 (got locking wheelnuts which DO fit, so that's a blessing).

think the problem is either the collar on the wheel, or the bit after the taper on the nut, if the straight bit after the taper was not on the nut then volia it'd fit quite nicely.

fingers crossed that someone has a nice simply quick n easy solution for me, and that I can fit the wheels at the meet tomorrow, I'll even let you take pictures of markus doing some work (very rare oppuruntiy, too good to miss! :D)

As you probably know I've got an MY01 and my wheels have that collar you can see. Not sure about the wheelnuts and its a bit dark outside to have a look at the moment ;)

You cannot knock out the steel inserts in the MY01 wheels as they are cast into the alloy.

Under no circumstances attempt to drill them out - they would have to be done on a jig to get them exactly central, and in any case you would destroy most of the taper, and most likely the wheel nuts would then come undone and the wheels would part company with the car.

There are two types of wheels/nuts fitted to Imprezas. OEM wheels locate the wheel centrally on the 50mm or so diameter spigot boss in the centre of the wheel, so shear loads are distributed here, and the nuts can be on a standard taper which purely clamp the wheels to the hub. These nuts are all the domed chrome ones which are on all UK models of Impreza and are interchangeable, they have no parallel spigot on the end of the nut taper. Prodrive wheels (or certainly the later ones) are also designed with the correct central locating spigot for Subarus and use the original nuts.

Most cars have different wheel location methods and different spigot sizes, so aftermarket wheels cannot rely on central spigot location as they have to be universal to fit on many different vehicles (the PCD/stud number is another issue as well).

Aftermarket wheels get around the loadings involved in fitting to many different cars by transferring the wheel load from a central spigot boss to using tube nuts as shown in your picture. For example, the Prodrive OZ 10 spoke alloys fitted to Carolyn's car use original Subaru chrome domed nuts, the Speedline GT1's fitted to mine use tube nuts.

Whoever supplied the wheels has given you the wrong nuts and should know better.

You simply have aftermarket tube wheelnuts for OEM fit wheels and need to get hold of a set of Impreza OEM chrome nuts.

It has crossed my mind funnily enough, but I think the Impreza specialist market is at saturation point......and besides, there are many more out there that know MUCH more about the cars than me!

I got the wheels from the garage and was told they were brand new (think they came of UK300 before it had the 17/18" put on) the center caps were still in the original packing and got this bag of (wrong) nuts, so someone supplied the wrong nuts to my garage, think I'll look into this.

anyway, I'm sorted now as someone (who's name escapes me, sorry!) at the sussex meet presented me with some of the chromed nuts, and the 01 wheels are now sitting proudly on the blackbeast, picture in members gallery.

you know, its this kinda reason I love scoobynet and the scooby community so much
