What oil is best
Can anyone advise me on the recommended oil for MY01 WRX i buy online as local selections are very poor,any good sites,im doing a service as i just got the car.Any advice welcome,the car is standard

Cliffy, This is always a touchy subject on here. Your handbook will say 5W-30 energy saving (which comes as a semi synthetic) and for normal use thats fine. If you want "best" then Motul 300V 5W-40 is my choice but Silkolene, Millers and others all produce high quality synthetics.

I really don't get the 15w oil people use in this country? It's not Thailand!
I use a decent quality 5w40 or 5w50 oil in all my turbo cars.. Always have done. If I was track driving or something I'd go for 10w60 silkolene or Millers |

I use Shell Ultra 5/40 in my classic it comes in a 4ltr bottle. Buy an extra 1ltr, what you don't use you can keep for topping up. Probably more crucial than which of these oils you use, because they are all top quality, is that you prefill the filter to avoid oil starvation on start up. Its surprising how much it actually takes to fill it. Unless you leave the car draining for a long time be careful when you re fill, mine took just over 4ltrs to reach maximum and you don't want to over fill it.

It'd be great to be able to conduct an experiment in the real world with 2 identical engines with identical normal lives (going to work, nipping to shops etc) and using 15w50 mobil and 5w40 motul. I wouldn't mind putting a wager on the 5w40 engine being at a lower state of wear.. especially in the UK The science behind the 15w and 5w bit surely should tell anyone that 5w is better from cold start? especially here where it's below 20dg a lot of the time. The only benefit I know of (from reading a lot on the subject and not just opinions) for using a 15w50 over a 5w50 for example is it's more stable (sheer stable IIRC) having the 2 numbers closer together? ie the viscosity of 5w50 isn't going to be as maintanable at high temps at long periods. Is this viable on the road? well maybe if you hold the bugger flat out on a motorway.. but saying that it didn't help my mates WRX that let go on the motorway running 15w50!! For the road, I'd persoanlly stick with better cold start protection and an oil that's able to cope (stability wise) in fast road conditions. If I was tracking or racing I'd go fro something like 15w50 indeed as it's supposedly more sheer stable when really being used hard. |
