Hawkeye RA-R Prices

How much are Hawkeye RA-R's really worth? I have seen a couple for sale for over 30k! Correct me if i am wrong but are were they not about 20k when they were sold in Japan? It seems like an awful lot of money for an Impreza.

I am considering going for one but 32K a PCM seems like an awful lot of money!

Why are they worth so much more than the normal RA?

Mikkel 08 June 2008 12:33 AM

They are very rare and the best track focused car of the last generation of saloon Imprezas. They are not worth £30k+ IMHO though. Give it a year or two and they will be a more reasonable £20-25k.

Personally, if I had that kind of wedge I would be looking at an S204.

Luminous 08 June 2008 09:52 AM

To put it into perspective my Subaru mechanic offered me a Toshi Arai (sp) RA-R for £23k on the road. There are a lot of importers out there that like to make a quick buck.

I did not have the cash to accept the offer, but another man did. I've seen the car, last time it was in for 4 new driveshafts as the owner had put on super sticky tyres and then went full bore on a high grip surface. All 4 driveshafts snapped like carrots.

rhyspw 08 June 2008 12:00 PM

Was that for a car with delivery milage? What kind of money would we be looking at for a car with 5000 miles?

That's not an RA-R and the reg istration process is different to a normal spec c which adds to the cost. :)

Ok, but if the cars are about 20k in Japan it still cant cost 10k to bring the car over and register it can it? I understand that whoever brings the car over is entitled to make a bit of money on it - 2k profit seems fair for the hassle - we all have to make a living but 12k markup seems a lot. Can somebody clarify this :)

Why not speak direct to an importer and ask how much for them to source that model for you?

rhyspw 08 June 2008 02:37 PM

PCM are an importers

TonyBurns 08 June 2008 02:53 PM

18k new in japan, then you have the model report, tax, shipping, esva, it all adds up, your looking at nearly 30k there.

Tony:)

rhyspw 08 June 2008 03:56 PM

shipping is about 1000, sva is a couple of hundred! Can other reports etc really add up to 10k? I know i keep pushing this point but 10k is a big difference :)

Mikkel 08 June 2008 04:51 PM

People have to make a living I suppose. Probably costs Subaru a couple of grand to make them yet they sell em for £18k.

Import it yourself?

Butty 08 June 2008 05:21 PM

Not forgetting import duty, VAT, conversion to meet SVA, valet, radio......
There was a nice little book on grey importing several years ago, which worked out that buying an 18k (in japan) car from an import dealership would cost you £28k here with about £2k of that as profit to the dealer.

Car cost £20k never has been 18k not even with the good exchange rate.
Vat costoms and excise £3500 agent fee £500 shipping fee £500 sva test fee £200 speedo chip £50 fog light £5 fuel neck £10 labour cat 1 alarm £300
Transportation from docks to your home/garage £200 plus petrol taking car to and from test station £50.

Sorry forgot to add £300 for tracker and £450 road tax and reg fee.

Just call it £26,250 as they never pass first time.

O yeh model report £25,000 ;)

Once UK taxes etc are added on plus some profit for the importer then £20k to £30k seems reasonable.

Terminator X 09 June 2008 12:36 AM

Why not buy one direct from Japan yourself then :smug:

rhyspw 09 June 2008 02:36 PM

why would people go for an S204 over a RA-R? Whats the difference in the cars apart from the carbon bucket seats in the S204?

bluenose172 09 June 2008 03:04 PM

Some people prefer different things from a car, the S204 is more refined, if you call it that, the RA-R may be too hard core. I'd go for the RA-R personally.

rhyspw 09 June 2008 03:48 PM

does the s204 not have the same suspension components as the RA-R? It looks like it has the same pink sti components, just the brakes, seats and wheels seem different. So how is the S204 more refined?

Suspension set up is different , S204 is the best car i have driven for handling on uk roads a,b and daily driving.

I would only have an ra-r for weekend use or trackdays.

The damping levels will be slightly less harsh for a start. Plus the S204 is based on a standard STI, so as such it will still have all sound deadening (in fact I read somewhere that the S204 has slightly more sound deadening), thicker windows etc etc so things like exhaust noise and road/tyre noise will be kept at more acceptible levels.

Terminator X 09 June 2008 10:46 PM

S204 has thicker carpets etc ;) Bit like how Audi would build a STi :)

Yep. The 'S' series cars are STI's equivalent of a BMW 'M' car or an Audi 'RS'. They have performance but also refinement that allows everyday use for someone who isn't looking for all out hardcore car.

^^ How long til the RA-R arrives?

I've got it.;)

Will start a thread soon on my overall impression of it, but so far I will say that it is a step up on my RA, and that was something special.
