Gearbox oil leak ?

People, i would really appreciate some assistance as my car is loosing what i believe to be Gearbox fluid rather rapidly. :eek2:

I have cleaned the underneath of the car and i'm certain it's not leakign fro mthe sump, and the top half of the block is bone dry.

The engine Oil level is fine and has been for all of the journeys.
The gearbox oil level is dropping.

When the car idles on the drive and in and out of the garage it doesnt leak.
When the cars been driven for a 10 minute journey it leaks (quite heavily)

With the car jacked up at the front it doesnt leak.
When the car is on the level, jacked up and standard, it leaks. (oil doesnt run to the back of the gearbox)

But where can it leak from on the gearbox please ???? i cant see anything too clearly at all but it is loosing it.

It's also getting on my wrapped headers & downpipe slightly and smoking under the bonnet :Whatever_

Any suggestions or past experience is greatly recieved.

Thanks
Chris.

From the pictures it looks like engine oil, does the oil smell pungent, gear box oil is normally very clear in subaru's, the level in the box has to be checked on very level ground, and also at the same temp.

i'm not loosing oil from the engine, or at least the dip stick doesnt show that.

Would i loose engine oil if it couldnt breath properly ??

morpheous 03 June 2008 05:06 PM

If the breathers were blocked it would blow a joint/seal somewhere on the engine yes,Try cleaning it off dip the g/box oil and take it for a drive when you get back look around the front driveshaft seals

ok so i cleaned it all up underneath with some spray de greaser and then jet washed it, spotless and very nice and dry after standing ticking over for a few minutes.

I took it out for a spin and immediately it was pouring out at quite a rate.....so i snapped some pics sharpish.

the leak is from the centre of the box, between the engine and the sump plug. The engine & the drain plug are bone dry, but the area with the pipes underneath is where all of the oil is collecting.

It does appear to run down the box though to the point where it drips....

try taking the starter motor or the inspection rubber grommet(top of the gearbox) off and see if its round the fly wheel, and also take the grommet of the thurst bearing fork and shine a torch down (dont drop the torch down the hole lol) correct me if i am wrong but is there a seal behind the thrust bearing.hope this helps

maydew 04 June 2008 12:01 AM

there is also a little under tray at the bottom of the box covering the flywheel just above where its dripping from . if you look towards the front of the car you will just see the teeth on the flywheel see if its dripping out of there too. keep us up to date be good to know what the problem is

minty 04 June 2008 11:41 PM

well the engine is out AGAIN !!

and the oil was all over the flywheel & clutch & housing.

The starter moter was also v oily. and you can see from the pictures where it's running down and out of the bottom of the box onto below.

excuse my ignorance, but what will need new seals (while its apart what should i renew) and where is the best and quickest place to source them ???

Thanks
Chris.

maydew 04 June 2008 11:51 PM

glad you found the leak mate just pop in to subaru and they will tell on the exploded view on the computer the part

maydew 04 June 2008 11:55 PM

is there much oil on the clutch plate???

minty 04 June 2008 11:59 PM

time for bed i'm afraid i'll be knackered for work in the am !!!
so the engine is currently simply out, i'll take the clutch off tomorrow and pray that there isn't too much on there and will hopefully clean off.

maydew 05 June 2008 12:01 AM

buy 2 or 3 cans of brake cleaner and spray the lot on it and hope it gets rid of the stuff

Eprom 05 June 2008 09:00 PM

As I said in the earlier thread what does it smell like, looks like engine oil, from the pictures, is there any oil behind the flywheel, if so it could be rear main oil seal.
If it is gear oil, there will be a seal on the primary input shaft, the shaft that goes into the box from the bellhousing.
Or it could be a leak from where the two halfs of the box are put together
