Rolex advice
 

I work for an insurance firm, and we have a salvage sale each year.
There is a ladies Rolex in it this year, and I'm thinking about making a quick buck.
Story of the Rolex:
Stolen from policy holder. Thief, or recipient of the stolen Rolex takes to a dealers to sell. Has all the paperwork, box, cloth etc. Dealer buys for 5k, pays by cheque, checks the Rolex register and finds out it stolen, stops check, calls police etc. Rolex now with insurance firm after policy holder paid out.

The sale we have at work is a closed auction, reserve is set at 2.5k. There is a few high flyers at my firm, so I'm thinking about an offer of 3.5k, to hopefully sell for 5k.

My main concerns are:

A: Do Rolex have a history? Ie, will the next potential buyer be able to tell it had a dubious past?
B: Will it affect the sale price? Ie: Like a car that is not HPI clear?
C: Is there a process to transfer to paper work over to the new buyer (me)? And again will the mount of owners affect re-sale?

Don't bother is my advice and I buy a lot of quality watches.

To answer your questions
a>no history as such although Rolex will be able to tell you if it's legit ie not grey market
b> women's Rolex don't hold their value like men's.
c>paperwork doesn't need transferring as far as I know but I usually sell them or swap outside warranty- obviously you will need to keep the paperwork it's vitally important.

Personally I wouldn't buy any ladies rolex unless I was giving it to a woman who liked unfashionable watches. Real ladies wear full size watches these days old bean.

So you really don't think its worth it for 3.5k?
The insurance notes I read suggested it was sold to a dealer late 07. So it must still be worth around 5k, or not?

Hard to know with a ladies Gold Rolex, not something I know about. Steel sports is what I'm into and the most active market. Might be a few quid in it for you but as far as I know the gold men's watches tend to be the one's that lose huge chunks of value.

In order to sell the watch youll need to persuade Rolex to take the serial numbers of their stolen register. Good luck, I couldnt even get them to write to me to confirm my watches' provenance. I only got around that by faxing them; they replied by fax...

With regards to its value: Id be extremely careful. Id be surprised if anyone will offer you £3,500 for a ladies size DateJust... Its such a vertical market now, women are wearing larger watches as stated above.

Their stolen register is a bag of ****e in MY HUMBLE OPINION (and to avoid legal problems for this site). Not only is it not as upto date as one might wish they only have those recorded as one would expect.

A little too safe / cryptic for me...

Check the braclet as that will determine price. It does not look like a presidential from the pic but with out a solid gold braclet I cannot see why a dealer would offer more than a few grand.

It had various markings on the clasp, couldn't capture it with my camera phone.
18K was the only one I recognised.

The guy NACRO suggested I emailed got back to me with a £1800 to £2000 offer. so based on that, amongst other things, I won't be buying it.

NACRO, other than this guy - can you recommend anywhere else good to buy a second hand Submariner or Sea Dweller?

I'm in the process of selling my current watch to fund one of these, I have had 2x Omegas and 1x Breitling in the past but never a Rolex (so far).

Rolex are over hyped ...I had mine since 1990.....only put it on a handful of times !!!

There's another place you might check out called Blowers but as I found the staff to be repellent, vile, sycophantic, slimy suck up salesmen so I won't link to it (funny how their attitude changed when they realise the jean and t shirt guy they let into their precious little shop is actually wearing a 10 grand timepiece) Plus their prices don't seem very competitive to me.

Agreed they also aren't the most accurate timepieces. What they are good at is not losing any money or is some cases actually appreciating. Assuming you were intelligent enough to buy the correct steel sports model then it's likely your watch hasn't actually depreciated even more so as you spent a chunk of cash and then decided to leave it sat in it's box. I love people like you, thanks for preserving my next purchase.

Don't take this the wrong way but that watch is hideous, truly awful in fact. You do realise that small ladies watches have had their day and succeed only in making the wearer look like an naff old trout with more money than taste/style who is some considerable years past her sell by date? We know you aren't like that so why not consider a Submariner or Seadweller yourself- it will look tres chic.

Rolex have gone to great strides over the past few years to eradicate this weakness. But it's a bit like Lancias and rust, the two are now inextricably linked. My biggest gripe with Rolex is that the self winding mechanism only lasts for about 40 hours, and that's assuming it's fully wound. If you do a desk job, like me, and if you're not flailing your arms around all day, it grinds to a halt after a frustratingly short time once you've removed it.

My mums had a small faced ladies Rolex for about 20 years, so now she's an old trout with more money than sense? Don't talk rediculous, maybe she just prefers to have a more discreet time piece rather than have a "look at me and how much money i've got" big faced watch on her wrist. Not everyone wants to show off with how much money they've got, unlike yourself!

She's had the watch for 20 yrs and presumably she's older than 30. I'm sure her watch is befitting a woman of advancing years who isn't at the cutting edge of style. All your comments do is prove my point.

Besides I think large watches look great on women of all ages and for someone of advancing years another benefit is that they can tell the time without squinting or looking for their reading glasses.

What I was talking about was someone going out, today and buying a watch which is naff in the extreme without even the saving grace of irony...........

I'm not a massive Rolex fan myself, only the Paul Newman Daytona tickles my fancy but is out of my budget ( maybe one day:) ). I quite like the most recent Daytona too but thats it!

The 'Newman' Daytona is a great watch but I'd baulk at paying in excess of 15 grand for a good one.

I've always liked Rolex. Not sure how a big gents one would look like on a smallish wrist though :)

The thing about watches like the Submariner or the Explorer particularly (think it's 37mm off hand) is that they are small by modern standards and IMO suitable for either sex. My better half wears an explorer II I gave her most of the time and sometimes wears my Seadweller or Submariners when the fancy takes her.

Go and try some on.
