Austin Mitchell, Labour MP for Grimsby, told BBC Radio 4 that there was no point in changing leader, but Mr Brown must learn to listen more.

"We've never actually listened and to be fair, Gordon hasn't listened to us," he said.

"Well, now we've got to listen and we've got to find out what's wrong and do something about it."

Labour MP Phyllis Starkey said: "I certainly don't think that if we revert into an internal party dispute that we're going to increase our standing with the electorate.

"We need to be concentrating on the job at hand."



So they admit they are not listening to us, and the PM is not listening to them.

To be honest I hope he does not reduce the car tax in anyway. In fact, I would love to see him go ahead with the rises that are planned.

It would create such a stir that it may actually become a mainstream election issue. An issue that will be so large that other parties actually want to offer a proper real alternative to "green taxes".

At the moment although its a festering issue with many people, its still not the major election debate I would like it to be. We need a kick back that is way way bigger than the fuel blockage that we had a few years ago. That made enough of an issue of these things for some action to be taken....however all the tax rises were simply deferred. We really need something more than this to have a proper positive effect.

Other countries manage to have a fairer tax system that does not penalise the motorist as a cash cow to pay for everyone else in the country. OK, the US economy is not the best right at this second, but overall they do incredibly well. They manage a tax system that works, but is not all about taxing aspirations.

Seems like a good time for the Queen to dissolve Parliament and go for an election, as she has the power to do. Can't see Mr Millimetre doing any good and I suspect that his party thinks the same way.

Surely a trick is being missed here, any of the other parties just need to say that they would cut fuel tax by say, 10p and stop the extra road tax and Hey presto, election won!!!!!

Trouble is, that would be expensive - they'd have to make up the difference somewhere.

Sadly putting up income tax - about the only tax we have that's actually related to ability to pay - seems taboo for some reason, probably because it's transparent and fair enough that the ignorant masses can actually understand it :mad:

Not at all - it would put the fuel revenue income back to what it was about 2 months ago, and the VED hasnt takebn effect, so it would be pledging to keep things as they are
