I'm having problems finding first gear, particularly when I am sitting in traffic and have been for a little while. Also, it tends to occur after a long drive. Then it bcomes literally impossible and I'm forced to lok for second, move a bit and then try again. Sometimes it slips in sweetly, others, not so sweetly. It does not seem to be a problem in the cold weather, though.
Anyone any idea, or how much it will cost me to rectify. I bought the car from a trader a week ago, RAC'd it thoroughly, but it has only just started happening. Any advice? |
Sounds like either the syncromesh on 1st is going, or the clutch isn't disengaging completely. Try sitting on a perfectly level road, in first :), with the clutch to the floor, and take the handbrake off (no accelerator). Does it move at all? If it starts to creep very slowly forward, then the clutch isn't disengaging properly and needs to be adjusted. Unlikely though as it's self-adjusting (I think?) and wouldn't do this if it was worn out.
Otherwise have you checked the oil? Low oil would do this. Failing that it's a matter of getting it checked out :( Which of course the trader should do. If it was RAC checked, then I think they warrant their work too so it might be worth following it up with them. Good luck! Cheers Richard [Edited by Bitten Hero - 1/30/2002 7:42:36 PM] |
