Fade image edges problem, or just remove background

If i had hair to pull out, i'd of pulled it all out by now and my forehead is flatter than ever from the banging it on the desk. I've been googling and trying for hours, but i can't do what i'm after.

I wanted to fade the edges of this image as it's going onto a white background.

I'm also trying to fade this image, but removing the background first:

Can anyone give a bald guy with a flat forehead a break?! :D

What package are you trying to do it on ? Photoshop or Paintsho Pro?

Is this the effect you're after ?

Photoshop, magic wand on black b/g, feather selection by 20 pixels, delete a couple of times and save.

the second image wasn't available when I tried.
