anyone that has done jury service, can you answer me this please



the current claim per day for loss of earnings is £59

If you earnt more than this does this mean you are basically loosing money or does your employer have to cover the remainder?

I certainly cant afford to take time off to do this service and loose money every day.

You only get a limited amount for loss of earnings.

Depending on your work contract, your employer may not have to pay you whilst not working. although if you are salaried then they may just pay you as normal, was the case with me.

You are legally required to do jury duty however, if you lose money it's "tough luck" I'm afraid. You have to have a VALID excuse to not do jury duty, this will be spelt out in the letters they sent you.

If it's going to cause hardship (and I don't mean not being able to afford beer! :D you may/will have to produce evidence of hardship, they probably won't just take your word for it), let the jury department know, they may be able to do something about it (i.e. let you off jury duty). I managed to wangle off the 2nd jury duty as I'd done it 3 years prior (2 years is the limit so I was lucky) and I guess they just put me on a priority list for exclusion.

Ah jury service always reminds me of Murphys law no 10.
When you go into court, you are putting yourself in the hands of 12 people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty.

I got grabbed last year, trouble was I was contracting, I would have lost a fortune, so I deffered it and went permanent so I get paid as normal :D

£59 a day, thats only just over minimum wage, I ended up on a six week trial the first time round, it basically cost me a job as I objected to having work delivered to my home so I could work after the courts closed for the day, I objected at this and got the cold shoulder when I got back as if I decided to do it, last year six weeks at 59 quid a day would have cost me thousands.

Id tell em that you suffer with tourettes then at least if you are forced into doing jury service you can sit there swearing at everyone :)

it's true, the whole setup is a blody disgrace. I read it all with disbelief when I got called up... odds on, it will cost you more in lost pay than the scumbag on trial will get fined! Luckily, work said they'd pay me anyway (although they aren't obliged to) so I didn't completely lose the plot. Just something else that is totally wrong on the law and order front in this sh!t hole country.

I was contracting up until recently so if I do get - I'm on a list of possible redundancies at the moment so I'm poised to go back to contracting if I have to (and earn real money:))
Surely there is something one-man-band contractors can do to get out of it though..

My Dad informed them that was his situation. By doing the jury service he would lose his work and hence livelihood.

He was removed from the current list with little fuss.

I guess they take a quick look at your tax records, it wont take much to work out if you try saying this and it's not the case. ;)

You have to wonder, how many miscarriages of justice are there because the jury are losing money out of their own pockets and want to reach a verdict quickly so they can get back to work?

You'd have thought that the system would want to treat jurors well, so that they can focus on the trial itself and be honest and objective, rather than being distracted by the extent to which they're personally losing out by being there. I got called up last year and the court wouldn't even cover car park charges, never mind mileage - so if you can't get there by train (which they will cover) then you're well out of pocket yet again. Politically correct b*llocks when it's most inappropriate IMHO.

i cant understand this, how can they expect you by law to loose money by doing this?

My company dont even pay for any time off sick so I wouldnt get anything from them, I would lose a serious amount of money


If I put down I own a Subaru Impreza and I must continue to work to pay for the £440 road tax and £1.20 a litre fuel, £59 a day wont support my car lol

Do you have to be on the electoral role to be called up?

If so, I'll be safe. Especially as I plan to go back to contracting.

With IT contracting rates of £300+ a day, do they really think someone could afford to lose that much per day and be objective about the case?

What sort of things can get you off it ??

Doctors notes etc ?

What happens if you just point blank refuse to do it?


Also is it true if you have a criminal record you can't do it?

If you refuse to do it, you end up sitting in the dock instead. ;)

I think your right about the criminal record. So in theory you could leave your bin open 4inch's, refuse to pay the fine and get yourself a criminal record. Sorted. :thumb:
