Older cars subject to the new higher road tax?
 

I think I heard on the radio this morning that the government plans to extend to higher rate road tax to older cars. Did I hear correctly? I have owned a W-Reg Impreza since new and as it had stood my car would have been excempt by about 12 months from the higher rate duty for the higher CO2 emission cars. But I now undestand it may not now be exempt. I dont use it enough to justify 400ukp per year road duty and 450 insurance.

This is not meant to start a thread on having a go at Govenrnment policy.

I would like clarification on what the road duty plans are for older cars.

The higher rate which before was retrospective to March 2006 is going to be extended back I think to March 2001 so older Scoobs registered after that date will pay the new (ludicrous) higher road tax.

Thanks for your reply. That is how I understood it. But I heard on the radio that this has changed and it is planned to be extended to older cars (registered before March 2001). This could be non-sense. But it would be good to know so I know whether to keep the car or not.

The high tax band was for cars regd after Mar 2006, now it's come down to Mar (?) 2001 ... any guesses what future budgets may hold for you older Scoob drivers?! He'll get us all eventually ...

WE live in the sticks, No Mains sewers or Gas.

Last year to fill up the Gas Tank, £250.(about 3 times a year)

This Year £375!!

this is old news to me. i knew about this on budget day. in fact it confused me today when they made fresh news of it somehow. its been covered in loads of threads on here for weeks. cant believe people didnt know bout it untill today.

Market forces may ensure we don't get to enjoy the cars any more anyway.

Oil and hence Petrol is sky high in price. $120+ a barrel for oil. Is that high? An industry spokesman this week reckoned it could get to $200 a barrel. I don't know what time-scales he was talking about but consider....

OPEC are trying to get production cut... Market forces, nothing less... There are concerns about the "headroom" spare above the current output. A good businessman keeps the game going for as long as possible and tries to still be in his seat at the end.

An extra £200 to tax your car is paltry is you consider the effect of doubling petrol prices.... or tripling them... Or them spiralling out of control before 2015.

My own view is this... If you want to see the world: Do it now before oil price rises may mass air travel too expensive!

Here in Ireland as of from July we have to pay 2000EURO (yes thats 2000EURO) a year in road tax for high emissions cars.

This only confirms what we already know - it's a tax for tax's(sp) sake.

With the rate hike last year for cars after '06 they promoted it as a way of getting people to buy greener cars now and in the future,now we know that's bollox.

They've now stooped to hit families etc with older cars that can't always afford to change them.

Now,i fecking hate Brown,Darling and the lot of 'em and would rather leave the country than vote for them BUT there is no way that a Conservative government will change things when they get to power,it's worth too much money.

Well I experienced this first hand, went to renew my tax and hey presto was slapped with the new improved tax bill and given a short 1 minute spiel from the woman at the post office.

I bet if enough people say they'll vote for whoever cuts the car and motoring taxes, they will ;)

It was "bollox" even than as it was retrospective legislation. I bought my car before the legislation was announced so I was denied the opportunity to take the tax into account with my buying decision.

Cars registered before March 2001 do not have an "approved" CO2 emission rating (check your V5s, it's not there on the earlier cars).

Hopefully that means us lucky ones are safer for now as we can't come within any CO2 banded regime. For us it is down to engine size, until they find some other clever way of shafting us!

Well I looked at it on budget day and concluded that I was affected (I had an MY01 reg in Sept 2001). I thought it fairly common knowledge.

However I've just chopped it for something cleaner, partly as a result of this tax change, and I must say that I got a decent p/ex, so maybe it wasn't that common knowledge at the time :)

The Times may have just made it more of a story and more people will now be aware. It's a crazy policy - it will force people to change what are good cars (e.g. me!) for no real reason. I have no real argument about doing it from here onwards i.e. if I was to buy a new car today then I'd be fully aware of what the Govt was likely to do. When I bought it back in Sept 2001 there was no inkling about this.

The Government has confirmed that cars up to seven years old are to be subject to new road duties.

It had been thought older vehicles would be exempted from the shake-up, which is designed to penalise high emissions, but the Treasury has now announced that owners of larger cars bought before March 2001 will be hit.

A spokesman denied the move had been slipped through 'on the quiet', but admitted last month's Budget had not 'spelled it out'.

However, critics insist Chancellor Alistair Darling failed to make clear that much of this money would come from older cars.

They say owners of vehicles that emit more than 225g/km of carbon dioxide - including some models of the Renault Espace and Vauxhall Zafira - will pay £430 in duty in 2010, compared to £210 this year.

Guese we will see what happens in 2010.

Youd think so, but this doesnt protect us from incorrectly applied rules. Cars registered without E-SVAs (and even the these dont have an accurate figure which can only be established with a new car when its type approved) are being hit with top VED band demands despite no official CO2 figures being available.

You shouldnt, for the reasons mentioned; but theyre trying. The confusion has arisen from the use of the term 'registered', which should have been 'manufactured'.

^^ Methinks that they used "registered" on purpose :mad: They then snuk (sp?) it through on that basis & it's not til a few years later (now) that people have spotted it. Basically any Scoob (with a +225 CO2 rating) imported in to the UK will be hammered for tax regardless of age as registered date will be post (a) Mar 06 or (b) Mar / Apr 01.

from what i have heard with people with imports yes you will be hit with the higher tax.
