Golf GTi or GT TDi?
 

I'm thinking about getting one of the new shape Golfs mentioned above. I won't be buying new.
Haven't driven eithier yet but was wondering one people’s thoughts of the above or experiences are.

GT TDi would be my choice, and thats based on the fun I had in my Mk4
The TDi's are superb for power, smoothness, and quality of drive :)

TDi, pretty tunable, better mpg depending on how you drive.
Band C for road tax £120 per year.

GTi, slightly more nimble, also tunable.
Band F for tax £210 this year, £260 next year

Depends what your priorty is. I wouldn't swap my GTI for a TDI but it's a company car and I'm not too concerned about economy or tax.

GTI is without doubt a better drivers car, if it's better enough to justify the extra expense is one for you to answer ;)

Look at it another way. The GTI will have far worse insurance, tax and mpg. Add that extra cost (I reckon £1,500 per 10,000 miles) onto the price of the GTI. Now what cars come into your budget? How about a BMW 123d? Probably the best diesel engine in the world in a car that is just better than the Golf oil burner. Whatever you choose it is important to compare the total cost over your period of ownership rather than just the price because the running costs of petrol cars are SO much higher than diesel.

Dont forget residual values too. High miles usually sides with a diesel.

my boss has a new Golf GT Tdi and let me drive it once. My observations are:

Looks good in silver with optional large wheels.
the DSG gearbox is very good and changes in no time at all.
The is lots of legroom and headroom in the car.
Handling feels quite taught but the ride feels firmer than my scooby
The performance isn't great, it pulls ok like most diesels but it fails to ever feel sporty.
Also, he is always saying that the fuel consumption is annoyingly high, despite it being a diesel.

Yeah if you drive them like a petrol trying to get the same drive it will bet poor mpg. Same as driving a 1.1 like a 2.5 turbo lol

But as a whole, a little nosier, but excellent cars :D

I have a BMW E90 320d at the minute and it’s brilliant.
I’m selling it to get something cheaper then will get the new Golf GTi or Sirocco next year.

i bought the misses a mk4 gt tdi golf for xmass the 130 bhp one

iv just serviced it tonight vw wanted £280 of a little service i just did all the filters oil and front brake pads for £100 took me 2hours in the rain now just got to get the service thing reset !!

brilliant cars nice motorway muncher comfy and a all round nice car

No-one should judge a MK5 Golf (gti or gt tdi) on their opinion or experience of a mk4 Golf.

MK5 Golf is in a different league, even in 1.4s form. So much so that the mk6 is basically a cost saving exercise by VW.



MKIV's were a triumph of grip over handling. End of.

a great car with plenty of pull

i serviced my brothers gt tdi on a 52 plate and reset the service light myself held in the left hand button on ins panel and quickly turned to right job done.

i think that was how i did it anyway (was 2 months ago) have a search on vw forum thats where i got info from.

back to original question.

depends on budget really if you are not worried about the money then go for the petrol version,if you are worried about money then diesel is the way to go.either way they are both nice enough cars with a decent bit of power just the petrol is slightly better in my opinion.

Well Disel is about 10p a litre more expensive than petrol now so doesent really matter!

True. But 10p means 10% more for fuel that will last you at least 50% longer. It adds up.

Deffo the Mk5 GTI, i just bought one after 18 months with a VW PD130 TDI engined car. With the expense of diesel its not worth getting one unless your doing 15000+ Miles a year. Although its recommended in the handbook to run the GTI on 98 ron so not that much cheaper than diesel.

That's if you buy new, get a garage to do all servicing and taking into account the, usually, higher purchase price of a diesel compared to the *equivalent* petrol car. Buy second hand and do most of the routine stuff yourself then the economics are very different.
