Leaky auto box
Hi Folks
I've been experiencing a slowish leak of fluid from my 1998 Impreza Sport Auto ove rthe past year. I'm at 67000 miles and the car's bog standard. I wouldn't have found out about the problem but as the fluid often spills onto the exhaust it burns and smells. It's worse on long journeys. The gearbox exhibits no other problems and is smooth-changing. Normal and Sport modes both work ok. I've traced the leak down to an access point or cover just behind the 2nd dip stick, which is on the driver's side of the box. There's a vertical cylindrically-shaped part of the gearbox housing that terminates in a cap that looks to be held in with a circlip. It's slightly hollowed out and gearbox fluid settles in this space. If I clean the fluid out it then returns. Should I be worried about something nasty going on inside the box or just get the cap (or seal behind it) replaced. Anyone got any experience of this problem? Ta Andy |
if your transmission works fine then i wouldnt worry about anything nasty jumping around in the box. Just go ahead and fix the leak.

Hi
Thanks for replying. I was hoping you'd say that! Doesn't sound like it's anything to fret over. Apart from finding someone to do the work and then pay the bill! Cheers. Andy |
