Modine Oil Cooler - change or not?

The consensus on SN seems to be to change the modine oil cooler/heat exchanger after an engine failure, only problem being it's an expensive part.

I'm ready to go ahead and replace it, but I have a spare block which only had a head gasket failure so I'm guessing the modine off that may be fine?

What does it look like inside (fins, turbulators etc?), would there be any way of getting rid of any swarf in it, and do they 'wear' at all, or can a 50k mile modine out of a working engine be as good as new?

if its had any bearing damage at all i would not risk using one again, as whilst it may be pricey (just under £100) its nothing to the cost of the other components you will damage in the long run...............

as for the s/hand one hard to say, although in theory it should be fine

You could flush it through with paraffin (sp?)
Tape over the ports and give it a good shake...

Alyn, if you can get one for just under a hundred quid I'll have it! Subaru are doing them for £140 including the VAT and the cheapest ebay deal I can find is only a fiver less once postage is included...

PM on the way.
