No,it's not a waste of space. And he is right about the factory speakers being your sq problem. An upgrade is in order, but that totally depends on what you're prepared to do about it.
You have many options at hand if you'd like to upgrade.Anything from simple, cheap coaxials to a true 2-way component(or 3-way http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif)set with an external amplifier to power them.
How much do you like your ICE?

Only reason i ask is that the chap who did my alarm installaion the other day, also specialises in ICE, and reckons the standard Kenwood
head unit in my 97 WRX is not too bad, and that it's the speakers causing most of the problems. Anyone out there disagree??

rockin'Ru,

Thx for reply. This chap i mentioned recommended a bass driver in place of the door speaker, and a separate tweeter in the door panel.
I'm all up for it - i as curious to hear if anyone thought the head unit Subaru supplied wouldn't be worth spending money on the speakers, but yours is a vote in favour. So, to keep it American, one and 0...! Thx.

The speakers that chap was talking about are called components.Just like a home speaker, the woofer and tweeter are separate from each other as apposed to coupled together like a coaxial speaker.
The woofer will go where your present speaker resides and the tweeter can go any place you want it to.You don't want it too close to the woofer or too far away. But if you get a set, experiment a little before you decide.
Also, component sets like power.I don't know exactly what head unit you have(it doesn't sound too bad)but it won't power a set of comps like they should be.If your HU has rca outputs(pre-amp outs)you'll be in good shape for running an external amplifier in the future if you choose to.
Did you mean the hu was factory installed?

It sound the nuts, but i have upgraded the infinity speakers all round!!!
