Squealing Brakes
 

Ive just fitted a set of subaru 4 pot calipers to replace my standard 2 pots on my classic and they squeal like mad when pulling up to traffic lights etc, itsd driving me crazy, they are fitted with standard pads, dont kmow if i have fitted the pads upside down? they all looked the same. or, maybe the thin metal clip thats fits between the pad retaining pins is in wrong? any one have a pic how they should look or know how they should be.

The Subaru 4-pot pads thave holes at the top for the pins, so there's no way you could fit the pads upside down. Technically, you could fit the calipers upside down but all the retaining pins again should be at the top as well as the bleed valve.

thanks for the reply, mine are now set up as per your pictures but there still squealing, i had the back calipers apart at the weekend as well so maybe it is them squealing and not the fronts, will have to havve a look at them as well.

Try putting new shims in them, or some copper slip to take up the tiny bit of slack.

I use Hawk pads in my classic with StopTech ST40's - and they squeal like mad when used on the road, ie not up to temp.

this is gonna sound really stupid, but where do the shims go? thought the calipers consisted of, the pads, 2 pins and the clip to gold them in and a clip that fits between the top and bottom pins, which is the shim.:wonder:

shims go between piston & pads. There are vents ones and solid ones. They go pad, vented shim, solid shim, piston. This is for each pad, so you should have 4 x vented & 4 x solid on each caliper.

New shims usually come with a set of OE Subaru pads, but I've seen them for sale seperately on some US websites.

My car doesn't have any shims. I just put loads of grease on the back of the caliper, but I've heard they are supposed to help disperse heat :confused:

brought the calipers second ahnd and they came with good pads, no seperate shims though. my try the putting some copper slip in there.

the shims only come with the original Subaru pads. I've not seen any supplied with aftermarket ones (Ferodo, Mintex, etc..)

Did you fix this as i have the exact same problem on my sti bugeye :(
