Ripped up the patio, now gI have to lay some turf. Lots of advice out there, but I cant find if i need to allow for the thickness of the turf when preparing the top soil level?? Any ideas??

Cheers,

Matt.

How thick is the turf? I'd suggest allowing some of the thicknesss... the turf will settle a little as the topsoil compacts under it.

And don't forget... Green side up. :thumb:

When i laid turf in my sisters garden, it settled about 10mm.

my tip is if you have a small-ish area, find your biggest B&Q. Wee stores only order turf in for customers but some of the bigger ones keep a little in stock all the time. Thing is, they can only keep it a week or so before it starts to look manky then die. Find when the delivery is made (weekly at my local store) and ask if there is any old stock left before they dump it and get the new stuff in.
The load I got was a little yellow and tatty-looking but came up perfectly with plenty watering and a little time. It just takes a little longer to get up to the standard of fresh turf.
It was worth it though as I got it for something silly like 20p per roll.

Found a pic....thats it the day I laid it. Some was a little yellow and some bits were a bit threadbare, but within a few weeks it looked 100%

Excellant usage of the hose and clothes line by the way.

Make sure you've chopped your victim up into as many tiny pieces as you can. Once you've done that, dig as deep down as you can and cover with quick setting concrete to 12" lower than you want your lawn to be. Then add top soil and finally lay the turf over that.

Who are you trying to dispose of anyway?

;)

just make sure your topsoil is as flat as you want your lawn to be, any dips or bumps will appear in the turf, so good preperation of your underlying surface is very important, and don't tell the missus you'll be using her bread knife to trim the turf sections.

Be a real man and do it with seeds the old fashioned way.

Look up turf supplies in your yellow pages or on the net and get down there and have a look - they'll usually stock several qualities from general useage to bowling green! As some of the other posts have said, preparation is the key - get your topsoil down ,level it, walk it over to compact it down then lightly rake it over. The turf should always sit higher than your surrounding paths etc to make for easier cutting. Use a scaffold board to walk on when you're laying the turf. Don't let it dry out afterwards.

We generally lay 5/10mm higher than the paving level, it will settle down, but not alot. Just make sure your tread your topsoil down well before adding a final dusting to rake to a perfect finish :)
