Hybrid Gearbox Advice Please!

Ok, I have an MY98 WRX that has the following transmission.

TY752VBCAA

I beleive this to be 4.44 final drive both front and rear.

I am due to DCCD it by fitting a new transfer case and the diff itself to this box.

While it's out of the car I was wondering about changing the final drive to something similar to the UK cars as I now use the car daily for work (well at least until the new house is built).

Are the UK cars 3.9 front and rear? Is this how they achieve the higher speed at lower rpm?

What needs to be done to make this happen to my box?

Can I keep my diffs but just change pinions and crown wheels ect?

Cheers for any help,

Wayne.

any ideas?

depends on how invovled you want to get?? do you have a std R160 back diff, presume you have as your post states WRX..........

you could simply bolt an earlier 4.1 WRX rear diff in place and change your front c/wheel/pinion to 4.1 to suit...........

or find a 3.9 rear ratio and matching front

4.44 legacy B spec box. So you need to make sure your rear diff is 4.44 as well, or change both front and rear diffs at the same time as Alyn says as the dccd transfer gears will be 1:1.

So this Legacy box has the front diff at 4.44 and I would imagine higher ration gears?

What about strength of the box?

Wayne stop messin arround with it leave it alone while it works, this way you might be able to actually drive the car to a meet once!!:lol1: :norty:

I think that the Ty 754 boxes are considered marginally stronger but the ratios should be longer as you suspect

I now have my DCCD diff so the box is coming out.

While its out, could I fit a taller 5th gear and leave the front and rear diff ratios the same?

Whats involved in doing this swap, if indeed it can be done.

Wayne.

Yes it can be done - Gear ratios don't matter as long as your front and rear diff ratios are compatible.

BUT, your gearbox is ty752vbcaa - which is the same code for Bspec leg or wrx 98 as you say your car is.

WRX 98 box has following ratios:

3.166, 1.882, 1.296, 0.972 & 5th 0.738 - which is the same as P1 orStiV or type r V limited 5th gear ratios.

So you already should have a long 5th?

If not -What's involved? You go to a garage and give them some money ;)

Are you my girlfriend? She stops me spending money just like you. I come up with a good idea and then she tells me no, its cant be done!!!

Only joking mate, I will keep the ratios as they are then.

The problem is 80mph(gps) at 4k rpm. I just dont like it!

Wayne.

H4RDY-P1 17 April 2008 06:47 PM

Yes but 80mph is above the speed limit wayne:norty: :D
Mine is like this now wayne with the type-r box in,must admit its a bit anoying, also i have found with my type r box(ver 6) when flat out from 4th to 5th it seems to die off like going from 3rd to 5th :wonder: .

Welloilbeefhooked 17 April 2008 09:21 PM

80MPH on private roads Pete!!!

So was yours higher geared in 5th before with the P1 box?
