Dr Colorchip - a review
 

Due to doing 500 motorway miles a week my 2003 WRX is suffering a bit from stonechips, or what some might call "roadrash". I was considering a bonnet and bumper respray, but at £1000 thought it was toooo much!!

Then a couple of months ago found a touch up kit from the States, initially I was a bit sceptical and was half expecting them to have a picture of a bonnet set alight like the maket traders do. However, bit the bullet and ordered a kit in WR Blue. It was £28 for the kit and £22 shipping (gulp), but I reasoned that if the kit was even halfway decent it would be worthwhile.

After reading the basic instructions, it was on with cleaning the bonnet and literally painting the bonnet as messy as you like!!

I was totally blown away and this all took about 10 minutes!! Admitedly it would take several hours to do the bonnet and bumper but there's plenty of paint and solution supplied, it just takes patience. Bif chips take 3 or 4 applications to get the paint to fill.

Personally, I feel it is worth the £50 and time and effort, as I'm a picky git and want a good finish, and after a respray, it's only going to get stonechipped again..

would this stuff be good for taking out scratches caused by some piece of scum keying my car.

F1 CJE, it really is a piece of p@ss, you brush on the paint. let it dry and then wipe off with the cloth and some solution.

They call it a "solution", I thinks it's a cross between cutting compound and polich, but it's like KFC, their secret ingredient!!

TBH I thought I was possibly wasting fifty quid, but I think it's fantastic, happily both mine and the wife's car are WR Blue. so the 1 kit does both cars.

Asian Gunner, it can also do scratches, but as always depends how deep etc, but yeah I took a scratch out the wife's car (sorry, no photos's) and you can't even tell it was there. It took 4 attempts to get rid because it was quite deep, but it saved paying £800 for paintwork, so all in all a good piece of kit

Bloody hell Mike, I know you told me it was good, but that looks ace! The big question on my mind is how durable will the repairs be? Enough to take regular power washing? Enough to take future polishing attempts by hand or machine? If yes to all of these then it's a clear winner, so please keep us updated on how well the resultant finish lasts, or whether the chips reappear over time. Great write up, you're getting to be a dab hand at this! :thumb:

the mobile companies are quoting about 300 quid for the 3 panels.

the scratches are luckily not too deep apart from at one point where its down to the primer on the drivers door.

i'm guessing this is the type of product the mobile companies use anyway asthe claim to be paintless repairs no matter how deep or wide the scratch is.

does anyone know how the mobile companies do the repairs?

Cheers Rich, instructions say don't polish for a week, however, I used the G220 after 24 hours and it looks great!! I'll be posting/emailing photos in the next couple of days, so you'll see for yourself

Agree with all the comments above thanks for sharing… I had a go at filling with a paint stick and then sanding and polishing but I found that it took 2-3 days as the layers had to be built up … as we all sadly no Subaru paint is hard but very very very very very very (you get the idea:wonder: ) thin and prone to stone chipping and that process just would not work on all those small little chips…….

Can you keep us updated . If it lasts ok anyone up for a group buy see if we can get the cost down ..?

just ordered some (on mike;s post, so if it all goes wrong I am blaming him :) ) as it must be cheaper than a full bonnet respray that I was thinking of doing.

when the weather holds and I get time, I will give an update

Guys, I'll post up photos in the next couple of days showing results after being hiy with my G220, I'm still very happy as I'm not keen on colour sanding if I don't have to!!

I ordered the same kit as you, though Dr Colorchip has just requested more money for shipping. is that correct ?

looks like the same kind of thing as the SSR stuff i had posted to me a few months back, they were offering a full kit to repair 95% of paints IIRC

about 2k all in

Tony, Bill email'd me an invoice that gave a breakdown for the product, about $54 and the shipping $46, totalling $100 (at the time £50) so it was paid as one bill.

is this stuff similar, as I presume this can be used with normal touchup paint and is a lot cheaper as available in the UK

Darren, could be similar, funny I get a lot of gear from Frost but never noticed that before. Certainly looks like it's worth a try!! It's certainly cheaper, but you don't get the paint, cloth, brushes etc, so all in all, would still be cheaper but not dramatically so by the time you add everything up as you get about 5 times the amount of paint as a touch up stick

i've just ordered the Road rash kit, with postage its $103, so basically 52 quid all in.

I see where the confusion lies, bill invoiced me for $85 first and then $18 afterwards, so yes roughly the same amount as you, just in differing figures.

Looking forward to it arriving as my front lip of the bonnet and other areas are a right mess

just be patient when you're doing it as you may need to do it 3-4 times to get a good overall result, best of luck!!

just ordered this $103 so 50 odd quid bargain,sent me invoice and printable instructions easier step by step than the ones supplied :thumb: looks good so i'll post pics next week when i do it;)
