bhp limit on std gear box???

cud any on tell me what my max bhp my gear box will hold before it pops the car is currently running at 320bhp with no issue but im looking at taking it to 400 plus and wonderd if it wud last long the gear box is an 03 wrx  ???

adzaves 19 March 2008 11:21 PM

Ive heard that you are running pretty much on the limit now for a standard wrx box. Suppose it would depend on certain driving styles though?

The STI box is supposed to be stronger by all accounts but not sure if yours can be made stronger or if you have to buy the whole STI one?

Im limited as to what I know, hope someone else can clear it up better for you !

I was putting 361bhp and 367lbft through my standard MY00 gearbox with out an problems.

No idea how much longer it would last though.

Depends how brutal you are

Sti will take 400 a 5 speed WRX well only a matter of time

Torque, not bhp kills gearboxes. There is no set in stone limit, depends on how the car is mapped and driven and, of course, previous useage etc.. Certainly, low 300s are fine if carefully driven, any higher and you're increasingly risking it. Quite a few on here, me included are in the mid 300s and the box seems ok....touchwood etc.. :)

zen told me 350 ish was a safe level for a 06 WRX but i think the gearbox is different than other wrx due to the move up to 2.5

GazTheHat 20 March 2008 03:52 PM

If your torque gets close to starting with a "4", start saving.

jasonius 20 March 2008 09:12 PM

Iirc, the 5sp was uprated ~2003 and again in 2005, which I believe is the same as used in post 2006 (ie 2.5) wrx's.

Given that the 2.5 wrx delivers a claimed 310ft-lb I would imagine, that with the warranty margin required by design, 350+ no problem. Probably 400 if driven with a little mechanical sympathy..:norty:

Had to rebuild 3rd/4th on my 06 wrx at 5000miles but not sure if it was human error:wonder: , its running iro 380bhp/370ftlbs its been fine since even after a tyre spining launch or two:).

MaDaSS 21 March 2008 12:15 AM

As above, i too am running mid 300's through mine, but i must say where my gearbox is concerned, i am a wuss with it. I will not tempt fate! lol.

Aztec Performance Ltd 21 March 2008 03:21 PM

A TD05-16g was enough to strip 2nd gear on mine.

That said, I drive it how its supposed to be driven and it will probably show its heels to most 400bhp cars.

Running uprated gearsets now.

Little point in having bags of power and having to take it easy, as you would be better off with less power and drive it hard imho.

DaveR 21 March 2008 08:59 PM

I've been running an MY02 WRX with a 2.5 litre 350bhp/350lbs ft conversion for over a year now without problems. Uprated clutch (AP), but standard gearbox.

Mind you, I don't Santa Pod it or anything - daily driver with 2 or 3 trackdays a year
