Help needed.
 

I am new to the Subaru scene and doing as much research as I can, but still need a little help.

I am looking to get a UK turbo car (1998 - 2001 classic shape), I'm not too bothered about mods other than a de-cat downpipe and a high-flow main cat, I would also prefer the high level spoiler. Will this require a re-map, what does that entail, and how much is it likely to cost?

There is also the fuel type. Some have said 95ron, some have said 97ron and some have said 98ron V-Power only. It's all very confusing, are there any definite answers to these questions?

My understanding is that the standard ECU can't be remaped on the 98 cars:-( But can on the later ones, so you don't have to buy a new ECU. Have at scooby clinic web site or similar, I think they give a price for a package like the one you would need including remapping the ECU.

You may also see about 10% improvement in fuel economy for ordinary driving, as you will get a better AFR (unless you go using the extra power). Helps justify the expense:-)

As above, if you get a 99> then you can take advantage of the Ecutek software that is available. An average price for the first map including licence fee is approx £600. Later maps are cheaper as you only pay the licence fee once. A remap is not essential for what you have in mind, however, it will get the very best out of your new car and is highly recommended.

As for the fuel a UK impreza can be run on 95 Ron but, in my opinion, be happier on 97Ron. If you go for a remap and v-power is available near you then that is the fuel to go for, assuming you can afford the extra pennies!

Just a question on re-mapping, it won't open a can of worms for reliability will it??

Not at all. You clutch and gearbox will happily take 300bhp and internals are good for 400.
A remap should see you running at around a safe 250bhp.
With a panel filter and a Walbro fuel pump, closer to 270 and boost up from 0.8bar to around 1.2.
A remap also unlocks the door for future mods as other mapping sessions are significantly cheaper after the first. (Around £200 thereafter)
