SLI 8800gtx

Who is running the 8800gtx in sli mode ?? I'm considering this but i'm unsure what sort of heat two of these will generate in my pc case. The pc seems warm now with only one in :) Also is it easy to fit two, space wise that is ??

Scooby-kid 10 March 2008 09:01 PM

Heat should not be a problem as they both exhaust heat out the back of the case. Space wise,if you've got one, another one should be ok, just have a look if there is enough room below (or above) the one that is already there.

Scott.

I quite like the idea of SLI but cant really see the point at the moment, I just got an 8800 GT and it will play Crysis at full detail at as high as resolution as the monitor will take, my cousin just got a new machine with 2 * 8800 GT's in and cant see any difference so 2 8800 GTX's seems like massive overkill or am I missing something ?

What resolution is that though?
An 8800GT won't play the full Crysis game at high settings at hi res at a decent frame rate.
In fact nothing does a decent job of that yet. But it's only one game.
8800GTX SLi is only worthwhile for hi res (1920 x 1200+) with anti-aliasing AFAIK. There is a temp hit as the top card gets a fair bit hotter than the bottom one due to having the other card on top of its fan.

My 8800GT overclocked a bit with a 4GHz Wolfdale will run 1280*1024 in Crysis demo with everything on high (XP/DX9 so not very high) but no anti-aliasing. It seems completely smooth even in busy bits with explosions etc.

However, I'm thinking of upgrading my old 19" CRT, I think I'll end up with 22" 1680*1050 as the 8800GT wouldn't be very good at the higher res. It sounds like it might struggle on high with Crysis at that too?

Plus it is major diminishing returns to go 24" and better graphics cards especially SLI from what I've read.

I think we need the next generation GPUs.

Ok, so to run Crysis at a massive resolution, fair enough, I am all for a bit of extravagent hardware but it just seems a bit ott, mine seems ok with Crysis at full everything and it does look fantastic.

They are talking about quad SLI now, now that does seem ott, especially as their dont seem to be the games coming out to make it worthwhile, Crysis seems good but I cant find anything else that gives even my £150 card a workout ?

what would scooby do 11 March 2008 03:42 PM

I run 2*8800GTX's and a quad core intel processor, crysis still stutters on max settings 1900+ widescreen resolutions

No heat problems as I have a big case and big fans..

john banks 11 March 2008 03:49 PM

I wonder why it still struggles at 1920*1200, it is only 75% more pixels than 1280*1024 yet you have twice the number of graphics cards (and 2-3x the memory depending on model of 8800GTX) and they are more powerful... is it just that scaling on SLI is poor just like dual->quad core is poor?

what would scooby do 11 March 2008 03:53 PM

Yup, probably scaling, possibly driver, game and OS limitations.

Is there any point in such high resolutions, does it add anything or is it just because you can (nearly ?)

It's the native resolution for a 24" widescreen monitor.

24 inch monitor, sounds tempting, does that mean that at lower resolutions on such a big screen it wont look so good ?

Also, I have a 19 inch widescreen, it doesnt seem too small but wouldnt mind a bit bigger one at some point but do you end up sat too far away or does it draw you in more ? My mate has a 42 inch telly in his small lounge and you sit pretty close so you cant see all of the picture at once, your eyes end up bouncing around.

Also, in the same room I have a 37 inch Toshiba 1080p telly, is that worth a try ?

Check if your PSU is up to the job too
