Big iPhone announcments

MS Activesync for one!

Live from Apple's iPhone SDK press conference - Engadget

Markus 06 March 2008 06:22 PM

Remote wipe of iPhone. Is that just for exchange stuff, or are we actually talking about completely wiping and protecting the iPhone, if so then is this perhaps Apple's way of screwing up those who have hacked their phones?

JackClark 06 March 2008 06:26 PM

I doubt Apple would stoop that low. At a guess you would be able to lock phones associated with a particular Exchange account.

Markus 06 March 2008 06:45 PM

From what I've been told, it's more of a privacy thing, as in, the iPhone is stolen, you remote wipe and lock it, so the thief cannot, a) use the iPhone, b) obtain any information from it.
No mention of how you'd unlock the phone, I'd guess you need to sync/restore it from the/a machine that you sync it with via iTunes.

SDK being shown, looks interesting.

jowl 06 March 2008 06:48 PM

Activesync support looks very good - does that for Windows desktop or just Exchange?

iPhone is looking better all the time. Roll on August and the end of my current mobile contract

JackClark 06 March 2008 07:47 PM

Looking incredible. Roll on June and the roll out of the App Store.

Grim day at RIM I should think, £4000 for a server licence, I think that price may be going down.

I mentioned it this morning, but boy am I glad I held out for the next incarnation of the iphone...3G and now full exchange support
:luxhello: :luxhello: :luxhello: :luxhello: :luxhello:

You'll be waiting a while for the 3G.

SDK *should* be available from here, however the page is currently failing to load for me, probably due to rather excessive demand.

when 3G comes out, the battery life is improved and maybe a 32GB version is released, then I shall be pushing you aside in the queue :)

the exchange support is the icing on the cake for me, our company and loads of my clients

JackClark 06 March 2008 10:07 PM

The battery life is great, although that'll probably change with 3g, anyone who knows me knows mine is in constant use and it'll go three days without connecting to my laptop.

SwissTony 06 March 2008 10:23 PM

is it that good ?? am impressed if it is. if I was you and had an iphone, I would be applying to the exchange program :)

Father Jack Hackett 06 March 2008 10:41 PM

I want one but can't decide whether to get one now or wait for a 3G one. No-one really knows when they're coming.

Assuming for the sake of argument that (i) I don't care about 3G, (ii) 16GB is enough memory for me, (iii) 2 MP is enough camera resolution and I don't need a flash and (iv) I don't care about exchange server, what am I likely to miss? It seems to me that the other niggles can be fixed in software updates. Even the ability to record video.

Also, what's so great about 3G download speeds? I have a work Blackberry that is 3G and internet browsing is still painfully slow even when in 3G range. I can't see a difference from EDGE.

Cheers,

Father Jack

JackClark 06 March 2008 10:46 PM

I didn't know that that was a 3G blackberry, prepared to be wrong though.

Father Jack Hackett 06 March 2008 10:53 PM

This one is 3G.

JackClark 06 March 2008 10:58 PM

Forgive me Father.

SwissTony 06 March 2008 10:58 PM

video of the sdk conference is now online

So ... buy now or wait?

My guess is they will bring it out sooner rather than later as current version not selling as well as hoped & the big issue seems to be 3G. Because that's not a big deal in the US they didn't think it would be here and O2 just wanted the G2 contract at any cost so were too craven to tell them.

But what does "sooner" mean?

My educated guess :) is 3G version announced states July 08, UK get it in time for xmas 08. end of june we get v 2.0 of the iphone sw, let a month go by to settle down and then the announcement.
I think i might write my letter to santa now :)

Simon C 07 March 2008 09:39 AM

Nice touches but none that effect me directly.

I don't use MS exch
I can't get a 3g signal where I live.

I'm due for renewal in April, just hope the price comes down by then, but I don't think it willas they have just upped the airtime for it. (basic pack 600 mins from 200 and 500 texts from 200)

Father Jack Hackett 07 March 2008 10:35 AM

Interesting. I thought they might release 3G version in Europe first.

Do you think if I buy an iPhone now I will be able to upgrade to v2.0 of the sw? Or will I always be limited to 1.x?

v 2.0 will be a free update to all owners of iphones

JackClark 07 March 2008 11:11 AM

Buy now! I hear all the time how my Nokia does this, my Blackberry does that, then I have to laugh at the button pressing and fiddling they have to go though to use an obscure function. Even the 3G thing, in the time it takes someone else to fire up their browser and type in an address I've been there, downloaded the info and gone on the iPhone.

Father Jack Hackett 07 March 2008 11:26 AM

 Well, coincidentally, my current phone has now broken so I have no choice ... buying iPhone today!

jowl 07 March 2008 11:42 AM

It wouldn't surprise me if the 3G iPhone was released in Europe at the same time as the US - at least.

Luckily, my current contract should have run out/near to the end by that time .
The money is waiting, Steve :D

Father Jack Hackett 07 March 2008 12:52 PM

Bought it! Now just have to get it home and set it up ...:luxhello:
