Methanol or Octane Booster?
I know they are different but if you had to go for one or other which would it be?
Methanol would win hands down on the price issue as it is essentially free (being more or less the cost of the petrol it replaces and a bottle of OB is about £3 to replace <£1 of fuel) but power and drivability-wise I would be interested to hear people's opinions. |
10% methanol with 2ml of NF per litre of fuel aka Scottimax
will give approx 7% increase |
sorry to jump in your thread. i run nf constant(mapped on it) im thinking of a new ecu. simtek so have 2 maps. would it be worth doing a meth and nf map. basically is it that good?
|
i have 2 maps on my simtek, low boost for V power and a high boost for use with meth & NF mix.
|
Its about how far you are prepared to go. NF is easy to handle, use and store.
Methanol is not. |

Methanol is not. think would only use for pod rolling road and track. is alot of messing around |
but the gains point at methanol use

they are probably already staring at the car anyway LOL

thanks for that Martyn

Torque seems a bit low for such a high bhp figure, would have expected at least 400 lb/ft of torque.
Banny |
has anybody got there car mapped for say 100ron?
super unleaded plus 2.5ml per litre of petrol to raise it another 3 points....i was considering gettin this done in april when i get my apexi power fc mapped. how realistic am i being. burt |

Lovely wide torque band :thumb: What turbo is that JD? Banny - methanol allows you to run more ignition timing under full boost, especially at the top end. JD's torque curve is much wider and holds up better than would otherwise be expected - it normally falls off as revs reach top end. Having 360+lb/ft of torque over such a wide rev range would make for a blisteringly quick car  |
the boost is only at 1.5bar on a GT30 hybrid from Alan Jeffery - Engine Tuner and is designed to run on a 2.5 (future plans) but works well on the standard internals of my STI.

Just had it independantly verified by another rolling road in our local area...

i beleive there was 23% slippage above 5000rpm on the 2nd set of rollers.

cheers martyn

nice power and tq curve. may use this on my second map when i buy a simtek.
|
Will be using a similar turbo to JD's on my own car but using a built 2ltr running 1.9/2bar with methanol/power which i used on my old turbo. SO hopefully should see some good figures might even crack 500bhp. view my scooby for full spec

Just been reading this thread.
Going to get car booked in for re-map get some methonal. Then get some more BHP. Is that all I need to do? Is it as easy as that? |
My question remains unanswered - though thank-you for on-topic replies so far.
Are we saying that methanol allows more fuel to be burned at higher revs as it burns colder so you can run more boost? If that is the case than good, but will OB allow early timing throughout the rev range and hence have benefit at all revs? |
is anyone mapped for just ob and not methanol
