WRX, STi, WR1?
 

Hi guys, I'm after a Subaru 03-55 Reg with less than 30k on clock, preferably in Black or the "common original" blue. Just wanted to know about the performance really. Is the STi Grp 20 insurance, whereas WRX 19? Does STi hit 155mph with a 0-60 5.3secs?

How could I tell the difference between a WRX and STi, merely by looking at the outside and interior? Just by looking at the red stitching on the steering wheel and handbrake, would that tell me that the cars an STi as opposed to WRX?

Also can someone confirm that the WR1 is actually an STi, but they only come in 04 Reg and in a Sky Blue colour, or do others exist?

Finally, does the STi only run on SuperUnleaded petrol, and can you STi guys please tell me what I would beable to get out of a full tank from topped up fully to bare minimum.

sti's have the bigger scoop and spoiler, and the wr1 is a ltd edition 2 commemerate peter sollbergs championship win. i get around 200 miles 2 a tank in mine depending on how i drive. go 4 the prodrive pack, with times of 0-60 in 4.5 and top speeds of 155 plus

Yes the STi is a group 20. My old wrx (04) was an 18 from memory.

Top speed 158mph and 0-60 in 5.2 sec

All sorts of mechanical differences between a wrx and sti, but visually, gold wheels, large rear spoiler, usually no fog lights, just covers with STi on them, more agressive front end, blue 'STi' badged seats, red stitching, six speed box, brembo brakes, and many others, but visually its fairly easy to tell the two apart.

I find my sti runs better on v power (super unleaded) and around town I get a massive 220 miles to a full tank! (£55)

I have had both a wrx and STi. The wrx is softer and sometimes more pleasant to drive, but the STi is an altogether different car to drive. Hard work at times but rewarding and I wouldnt change it for the world!.

What's your budget , mate. Try a WRX with PPP for similar performance to STI ( Prodrive claim 4.8 to 60 ). WR1 only available in the light blue. 05 on STI has the DCCD. This is standard on WR1 from 04.

I get around 250-275. 220 is not hard to achieve.

Alright guys, thanks for the replys. Another thing, would all the STi's in 2litre make the distinctive burble sound when ripping it? I absolutely love that sound. However, I viewed a 2.5l WRX STi (56 Reg) today and the exhaust was not loud at all. Do they need a different exhaust fitted or will the standard provide that sound?

My budget is £15k, but I may be-able to stretch that to £17k. I have seen so many on Subaru.co.uk but ideally want a black one, with black alloys (RB320 lookalike).

I currently drive a 206 GTi 180 and was considering a Type R, but these cars have no match for the Subaru/Mitsi generation.

Re: mileage per tank. I currently get 240 miles out of my GTi 180 from full to near empty and that costs me approx £43 to fill. Now if I can get approx 250 for £50s worth from a Subaru then I am very happy. Is this feasible with short bursts of power here and there?

It is definately a 2litre WRX STi I want (260bhp) but would be great if it had the PPP.

If you get a newage STI with PPP you won't have to rip it:wonder: like your 206. All subaru imprezas with a turbo give that distinct burble as it's the boxer engine that produces it, yes a exhaust will increase the level but beware that the plod are now clamping down on noisy exhausts.

View my Scooby mate. Maybe able to come to some deal for your budget ;) . Mine is a Japanese spec. Very rare car.

Not if the car is a JDM with twin scroll turbo and equal length headers.

It's the headers that produce the sound.

I get between 150 - 250 miles (dependant on driving :norty: ) to a tank of super unleaded in my UK STI with PPP. Standard STI's don't need super unleaded but most use it, STI's with PPP super only. £16k should get you a 05 UK STI with PPP easily, it did for me spring last year ;).


What you can find here on Scoobynet is a Japanese imported model is best mentality. Personally I'm not fussed each to there own but I do get fed up seeing the statement over and over again. In my mind all scoob's are fantastic cars :notworthy wether they are UK models of not.

A test drive of the models you fancy is the key. Drive them all, then make your mind up. Which ever you choose you won't be disappointed.

Some very good points there :thumb: . Both JDM & UK cars have their plus' and minus'.

I've seen 06 Sti's for about £17k : 2.5 litre, 276bhp as std with bucket loads of low down torque. Just get a Ninja backbox from Scoobyworld to release the burble and "job's a good un" !

I was in a similar situation a few years back of (do I go JDM, UK STi, etc) I went UK STi because I wanted warranty and to ensure it was recognised by as many insurers as possible. I didn't want a spec C as I didn't want a harsher ride (STi gives you that already), etc anyway.

So based on your budget, etc you can probably get (£17k) an 06 Hawk or go for a 55 STi with PPP as a minimum. If I knew what I know now I would go for one that was modded with upgraded brakes, suspension, exhaust, remap and ICE. Back then when you don't know much you think a modded one will have more issues when in fact if done by reputable specialist (as most are) that would be your best bet.

But as I understand your coming from other car models you may want to be more cautious so get a ppp sti Type UK 55 or older (preferance on whether you want to try a push for a hawk) or sti with blobeye. I have the blob eye you can view mine, it's a very good example of a 'proper' subaru (blue with gold)...:norty: :norty:

Except those with equal length headers (ie. JDM - Japan Import). It's the unequal length in the headers that create the noise.
