Amiga Vs Atari ST

I plumped for the Amiga at the time.

I will never forget Watching the intro to Shadow of the Beast II for the first time.

Or being banned from GAME in Oxford for taking too many games back claiming they didn't work but having copied them and gone back for another :)

Any game by Pysgnosis was pretty much awesome. Bitmap Brothers with Xenon 2, Speedball 2 and Chaos Engine.

jpor 04 March 2008 12:20 PM

Seconded about the AMIGA. A1200 was the best home system I owned, with AGA graphics to boot. Also liked the Eric Schwartz demos.

PeteBrant 04 March 2008 12:23 PM

Download winUAE to have those rose tints firmly shattered :)

To be fair, some of the simpler less graphical games have still "got it" - stuff like paradroid 90. But man, the Cinemaware game,s which I used to adore, have not aged well.

krisclarkuk 04 March 2008 12:34 PM

Amiga + Pinball Fantasy = win! :thumb:

used to have loads of those music/graphic demos... like the bond girl style one was done very well.

Great machine in their time (also had a mate that worked for Commodore and used to get bits very cheap for us so ours were a bit pimped)

I wasted many a hour on the likes of Wings and It Came From The Desert :thumb:

Like you say, happy memories should remain that way, steer clear of reliving the moment ;)

DJ Dunk 04 March 2008 12:36 PM

Amiga for me too. Although, just the lowly A500.

I spent day upon day composing music with FastTracker. Great machine for sampling and composing (although, as was the ST). I still play with a derivative of it today.

Used to love demos like the 9 Fingers demo, Jesus on E's & State Of The Art (Demo Podcast - Amiga Demo Podcast.

Played a lot of Cannon Fodder, Chaos Engine, Dungeon Master & Xenon 2.

StickyMicky 04 March 2008 01:06 PM

i still play "shuffle puck cafe" now and again :D

Demo scene's still going strong on all platforms

For those who can program i'm sure you'll be impressed with what the following guys squeezed in to 177kb on the pc, who needs bluray storage with some decent programming :D

A friend's father had an A500 and after playing Flacon on it, I lusted after one. Eventually saved enough pennies to get one and was very happy with it. Falcon, Carrier Command ("It's just another mission"), Xenon: Megablast (excellent them tune :)), Exile (Must see if I can get that bugger to run under emulation, was truly excellent game), Gods, F18-A Interceptor, Elite, and many, many other games.

I also had an Action Replay, along with external floppy drive and a memory upgrade, which I think was a massive 2MB :D

HPLovecraft 04 March 2008 01:48 PM

Amiga man here too!

(commodore64 b4 that, and vic20 b4 that and zx80/81 b4 that!)

Mate used to have a speccy, but they werent as good graphically/soundwise - but did have some addictive games (Ultimate play the game made some of the best - jetpac, cookie etc)

Any speccy fans out there should check out this site

World of Spectrum

just about every speccy game ever released free to play. Go to the archive section.

Iain Young 04 March 2008 01:49 PM

Had both :)

I've got a spectrum emulator on the machine, was playing Scoop the other day (text adventure, remembered it from school and never completed it back then, but did now :D). Had a play of Dan Dare earlier today, lots of fun. Also got near to completing kendo warrior, something I recall getting close to doing many years earlier, but had the machine turned off my an impatient mother due to me saying "one more second" when I was meant to be getting in the car to go to school :D Ah happy days!

Anyone still using an Amiga today? Looking at purchasing an A4000 or an A4000T. Any experiences?

jowl 04 March 2008 06:22 PM

Loved my Amiga(s) and still do. Mainly play under emulation at the moment but I'm hoping to get some of the real hardware setup.

Particularly interested in the couple of mini-itx Amiga A500/1200 hardware that are in development. One of them is even small enough for handheld/fit on PCI card.

Granby 04 March 2008 06:37 PM

Atari ST for me :D

jpor 04 March 2008 07:18 PM

Anyone used a CD32? I believe on their own they weren't too bad for gaming. And if you add a keyborad, mouse and External Floppy disk drive it can be turned into an AMIGA1200.

ScoobyDoo555 04 March 2008 07:18 PM

Still got my ST :D

It got pushed over to Music Production duties, but still remember it with Kick Off 2, Carrier Command etc, and my Competition Pro joystick!! :D

Liked the Amiga, but really only got into them for the Music - the Atari had MIDI (Music Instrument interface) and pro software. The Amiga had games :)

Dan

Arguably the ST was more music friendly, however the Amiga did a great job with the likes of Octamed and Soundtracker

Probably the most famous thing to happen to the Amiga musically was the release of Some Justice by Urban Shakedown featuring vocals by Ce Ce Rogers (I'm sure DJ Dunk remembers it ;) ), they basically used 2 Amiga's to get true 8 channel music keeping the bit rate sounding as high as possible.

Luminous 04 March 2008 07:59 PM

Still got my A500 with its 512Kb upgrade taking it to a whole 1 Meg :lol1:

I need to brush the dust off and have a go on it. Not sure if I have games or a joystick come to think about it. So many good games on that thing :)

I remember that, in fact i've still got the CD single and what a TUNE :thumb:

wwp8 04 March 2008 08:20 PM

never forget the say when i opted to be different and bought an atari 520 ste over the amiga, and went to a shop in totenham court road and asked
"what do you have for the atari 520ste?"
his reply was "i can sell you a bin!"

i could have killed him there and then , except i was about 12 at that time....
but beware kids with tempers

Sonic' 04 March 2008 08:26 PM

Atari ST for me too

Then a Mega STE :)

Hell yeah :D Mint, original 12" still sat in my record box ;) As well as a bundle of remixes. They don't make basslines like that anymore :notworthy

I think I still have a bundle of Amiga disks with my original samples on somewhere. I used to use my Amiga to add samples to my live mixes too :lol1:

I bought one of e-bay about 5 years ago. Must confess I haven't used it yet! I'm looking for a SX32 Pro to turn it into a good spec A1200 - and get SWOS on it

haroldhettaturbo 04 March 2008 09:28 PM
