Tribute bands

What is the SN opinion of such acts? Thing is, I've sort of joined one and I'm up for a bit of shameless self-promotion, as usual ;) Is even the mere concept of them utterly cack, or are they considered to be worth seeing in the absence of the originals? I've seen a couple of crap ones and several really good ones. I've joined this one simply because I love the music so much and would be happy simply to rehearse without gigging.

Opinions please?

Sonic' 29 February 2008 12:28 AM

For me, there are a few I would actually like to go and watch, but I dont know whether it is purely for the music or to see the band and how well they perform and pull it off

Being a muso too, I can / tend to be critical sometimes going to gigs, even more so if covers aren't done just right

The concept of them is good, as long as it isnt stars in your eyes or karaoke style :D

Never seen Legends in Las Vegas but it is supposed to be good by all accounts, but the last series on TV from what I saw I dont think some of them should have even got out of bed

So go one, which tribute band have you joined ?

We have a few play in our local. It' a guaranteed good night. :)

But the one that book venues, sell tickets and think they're the real thing.... Not so sure.

Which will you be doing?

Well none of us look like the band! The experience will purely be the music, which we are trying to get absolutely cock-on. :)

Odds on 29 February 2008 12:39 AM

You'll get a good response then. I'll bet money on that. ;)

Well this is a vid from rehearsals; our first gig is next month. What do you think?

Sometimes

Shark Man 29 February 2008 12:54 AM

Whilst watching "Fred Zeplin" I have questioned as to why am I here, when the real'un lives down the road :cuckoo:

It's all good, unless your ****e. Which is what the plastic glases are for...although there are bottles sold specially for such occasions though :thumb:

Next up: "Blues tribute"

Anyone remember "Dread Zeppelin"? They were fantastic. They did Led Zep songs in a reggae style, sung by an Elvis impersonator called "Tortelvis". Sublime. :D

I thought you were joking for a minute there:

I think it will go down well with the crowd. ;)

Where abouts are you playing?

Sonic' 29 February 2008 01:03 AM

Sounds good so far, only listened to the one in the link, but will have a listen to the others tomorrow

Mostly northern England. The full gig list is here: Straighten out

SiPie 29 February 2008 08:46 AM

We do 'rather well' considering it's us that have the biggest laugh :D

Jock Johnson Live Covers Band Edinburgh Gigs Live Music

Been on the go a good few years now but not really a 'tribute' band....just borrowed the name really :lol1:

PS The demo is old and crap (recorded as a 3 piece) and has zero reflection on what we do these days

However, sadly may come to an end soon as our drummer is doing 'rather well' with this lot.....his slightly more serious attempt at music ;)

The Debuts Home

They were supporting Hard-fi on Monday and Ocean Colour Scene next week so here's hoping they get their break :thumb:

pslewis 29 February 2008 08:49 AM

The Illegal Eagles are absolutely fantastic .... see them whenever I can - I don't fancy paying £150 to stand 500 Yards away from the real Eagles .... who could be all 'stand-ins' anyway for all I would know! :lol1:

MickWrx 29 February 2008 08:49 AM

Actually is rather good that, my head was rocking :D

Holy Ghost 29 February 2008 10:10 AM

australian pink floyd show. good enough to fill arenas in the US, the albert hall, NIA and NEC over here. and boy are they good - nick mason has said that they are technically superior to the real floyd as they play together more.

there's a lot of snootiness about tribute bands. what's the difference between the london philharmonic performing beethoven or gershwin and a skilled band of musicians performing the work of contemporary composers? none that i can see. preserves the legacy and introduces it to a new audience.

They are brilliant! :luxhello:

Seen them 3 times now at the Albert Hall. :D

MJW 29 February 2008 11:09 AM

A friend of mine plays in a Clash tribute band, Rebel Truce & they're brilliant seen them a few times now. Theres a 1mb sound clip of them doing White Man in Hammersmith Palais here

Well worth checking out :)

Paul3446 29 February 2008 11:46 AM

Looks like I may be in the minority here, but I've always thought the idea of going to see people pretending to be someone else pretty much sums up the weird Celebrity culture we live in. :wonder:

I just don't get it! If I want to hear a band's music, I'll put the CD on, if I want to go and see a band live, then I'll go to one of their gigs. I can't see a scenario where I'd want to go and watch people pretend to be that band.

CrisPDuk 29 February 2008 11:58 AM

So long as the original band were worthy (and The Stranglers definitely count there:thumb:), and the tribute band can play at least as well (I hope you've got a decent bass player;)), I don't see the problem. If it were me I wouldn't put too much effort into getting it cock on though, the best acts, or the ones that get remembered, are the ones who put their own spin on it:thumb:

At the end of the day, mostrecently emerged bands are really just glorified Ramones/Clash/Buzzcocks/Pistols/Undertones/etc tribute bands :lol1:

Hell yeah:thumb:

Un-Led-Ed, 5,000,000* and No Quarter Pounder are all present in the Duk CD collection

J4CKO 29 February 2008 12:27 PM

The Australian Doors were pretty good, went to see them twice, really captrured what the Doors were about, few beers, bit of smoke and you are back at the Whisky-a-go-go on Sunset Strip circa 1967.

Dread Zeppelin are ace but they arent really a tribute, more of a comedy act, sometimes there are things that just appear that are based on original works, for example Dub Side of the Moon, well worth a listen.

SiPie 29 February 2008 01:04 PM

for example Dub Side of the Moon

Abdabz 29 February 2008 01:15 PM

I went to see By Jovi at Chicago Rock in the St Helens (the greatest town in England).

"By Jovi" :lol1:

SiPie 29 February 2008 01:22 PM

Seeing that, as a band we were finding Jack Johnson covers a tad 'lame' we thought about a name change to.......

Iffy Biro

Still contemplating it now the beard is fully grown :)

Thanks for that. :D Yes, we do have an excellent bass player, but the keyboard player is God in my opinion - the band couldn't happen without him and that's a fact. If owt ever happened to Dave Greenfield, I reckon JJ Burnel would be straight on the blower! :lol1:

There are a few more examples of our Stranglers stuff on my Youtube channel. :)

seen a few tribute bands,. luckily most have been pretty bloody good. most of the ones i do see are usually due to the fact that the original band are no longer for whatever reason ,so its not like i *can * actually get to see the real thing , but enjoy a night at a gig for the general ambience and craic

k.b 29 February 2008 08:24 PM

The only tribute I have seen was Peatloaf who I though was very good.

There are a couple of guys I have met who are in basically THE number 1 Eagles tribute band, apparently they are so good the Eagles even called them up to play in St Andrews one time.

The Eagles Story II

They can be found here.Jim is a really cool guy too and Mr archibal lives just round the road.

jjones 29 February 2008 09:29 PM

tribute bands a fecking great, they all sound as good as the real thing if you drink enough beforehand.
