anyone else been turned down for laser sight correction?

twice now i have been to a laser clinic to get my eyes treated. i am mildly short sighted but bad enough to need glasses when it is dark. my prescription is -1.25. each time i am told that the surgery may make my eyes worse at night as they are not very bad. they are bad enough to need glasses which is frustrating as i always have to take them out in case i have to drive home in the dark. if i forget them i am stranded lol

i sort of wish my eyes were worse so i could have the treatment. has anyone else found this and is there an alternative?

I hear drinking De-icer makes your eyes sight worse !!

-Please note, this is not advice and if you attempt to drink de-icer you are very likely to die ! -

-1.25 for reading is really not very bad. Is it worth the risk of the laser surgery. I would certainly think twice anyway because there is a risk involved I understand.

its not a problem reading lesley, its the things in the distance i cant see

they refuse point blank to do the surgery so i dont have a choice. i was wondering if there is a different laser surgery around now as the last time i went to a clinic was a couple of years ago. surely they have made advances...

Sara - let's have some pics with and without (glasses !).

My eyesight is -8 dioptres (think Mr MaGoo !)and I wear contacts much of the time.

I was told my eyes were so bad that laser surgey would only get them down to, well, about -1.25 ! In other words a lot better, but I'd still need specs.
Not sure if it's worth the bother - as it is I don't need to be too fussy with women because I know that when it comes to bedtime they will look like an amorphous blob !

There is a new type of laser surgery that they have developed at Moorfields Eye Hospital. As I understand it with the new procedure there is less or no chance of scarring in the long term and many patients also end up with better than 20 20 vision.

As soon as I have saved up this is the route I intend to take.

im in the same boat -1.25 in one -1.75 in t'other eye, use my glasses whenever im driving and with the buy one get one free deals on glasses i just leave a pair in the car :smug:
as for surgery i would contemplate it until i was squinting like a fool at everything, just not worth the risk or £300+ per eye, especially if you need them doing again as your eyes deteriorate as time goes on.

Dunno, having seen your "hobby horse" pic, I reckon that might be fun (if a bit bruising !). :D

i cant ride anymore as my back hurts, these days its a mobility scooter ;)

Brendan Hughes 28 February 2008 12:41 PM

Sara, I only really need my glasses for driving at night or seeing clearly for long distances (eg, attending conferences when someone uses small print on a slideshow at the other end of the hall). Result - my glasses stay in the car, and I frequently forget them for conferences! (but hey, slideshows are supposed to only support, not replace, what the speaker is saying). I suggest you just leave yours in the car. Also these days you can pop into a large chain opticians and buy cheapo glasses, ten quid or less, for specified powers, including 1.25. If you're not too much of a fashion victim ;) you could consider those for emergencies.

Much cheaper and simpler than laser surgery.

not chearer for me..

it is easy in theory but if you knew me you would know how hopeless i am at doing things right. i wear wonky glasses as i always sit on them in the car. if i dont sit on them i lose then. i dont want to wear wonky glasses anymore :D

i might contact Moorfields. my daughter used to go there as she is partially sighted

Doesn't bode well for laser surgery then...

Mine are always in the same place in the glovebox. Having seen an earlier thread on the contents of your car, perhaps you have a point... :)

Hello

I had Laser surgery about 10 months ago. My prescription was about the same as yours. I had Intralase with Wavefront. This is the most expensive option but has a better heal time and better night vision. I have 20:20 in my left eye and slightly less in my right.

The will usually only refuse you for treatment if your cornea is too thin.

with age wont the sight go the other way anyway :wonder:

so with that theory in mind, give it a year and you will be 20/20 again :luxhello:

stevebt 28 February 2008 02:58 PM

My missus can't have it due to her having "menieres diasies"

you are spot on :thumb: as the eye hardens and most normal sighted people require reading glasses, a short sighted person avoids this need for longer, as it does indeed level out. I was warned of this when I had mine lasered years ago, however I went ahead anyway, cos when I get to the age of reading glasses, I will be mostly dribbling and ready for the home :)

sara, explain that the procedure would help as these blinding shooting headaches you experience are affecting your ability to drive a bright yellow car :)

Power Junkie 28 February 2008 03:25 PM

My night sight isnt as good now I have been lazered, I get lots of dazzle, but other than that all good.

sarasquares 28 February 2008 04:05 PM

its a tricky one. i could end up with ok day vision but night driving could become worse.

what would anyone else do in this situation..........take the risk?

usually when i have lost my specs i am wearing them :p

And as you've said in your OP that you want the treatment to avoid remembering glasses which you only wear at night now anyway, it sort of puts a big black line through the whole idea, no?
