theft on private land
 

looking for some advice if anyone can help.
my girlfriend has a horse which she is paying someone to keep it in a stable and use of a field and other areas.
there are lots of other people there with horses too.
now since she's been there some of her horse equipment goes missing, sometimes it reappears, other times its never found. She has seen someone take some of her stuff but as long as its returned she doesnt mind.
She is only out at night as she has college during the day.

Now if it goes missing what can be done? The land owner cant give her a locker of somewhere secure as there are none left.

Question is who is responsible, should the land owner have some form of insurance? or do I have to notify the police? can the police do anything since its private land?
I want to have a word with the land owner and dont want to threaten the police if she knows they cant do anything.

horse equipment aint cheap to replace either.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

nothing to do with the landowner. Unless of course its in the contract that the landowner is providing some sort of secure storage facility.

I would expect that she will have to pay for such a facility, the landowner does not have to if he does not want to.

As for the police, theft is theft. Getting the evidence for them to prove anything is another matter.

think she'll just move her horse somewhere else at the end of the day as she doesnt get on well with the landowner anyway as the landowner is a **** and needs a good slap.
yea proof for the police would be quite difficult I guess.

I'm responsible for my horses tack, even if some scrote from the stables decides to steal it I would have to claim for it on my insurance.

The place where I am alarms the tack room, but everyone knows what it is... so if they wanted to they could clear the place out! and at up to a £1000 for each saddle that's quite a temptation...

Still, as long as they leave the horse all's well :D

I don't think the solution is through the law. Yes it's theft but there's no evidence and no witnesses, I don't imagine the police going there and taking fingerprints. And it is unlikely to be breach of contract as any contract worth its paper should say the landowner is not responsible for theft of any property on the land - particularly when it is not locked up anywhere! I see that clause almost every day in gyms, car parks, etc.

I suggest you ask the landowner to invest in more lockers even if they have to spread the cost among the tenants.
