forrester urgent help needed

rite lads help or suggestions needed, basically a mate decided to change the oil and do the rear pads on his forrester today,he says he jacked up the front passenge side first to remove the oil filter and drain oil.then jacked up the rear 1 side at a time and changed pads.then after doing all this and refilling with oil.he went to put the car into drive and ther was a slight resistence in the change but noting ,it selects all ranges but wont move in any direction.any ideas

it's just the filter and drain plug for the engine are on the drivers side of the car whilst the gearbox drain and filter are on the passenger side
