Shortest take off and landing ?

Just came across this on live leak, seemingly from a flying competition in Alaska.Pretty cool :thumb:

LiveLeak.com - The amazing STOL Aircraft, shortest landing and take off ever recorded

Scoobychick 23 February 2008 01:18 PM

Cool, that plane must be very light!

Scoobychick 23 February 2008 01:20 PM

Actually ignore that ^^ as I've just been told by someone who knows about these things (hello Rob ;)) that it must have massive power and a really high lift wing :thumb:

The pilot of this Avro thought that they could do STOL landings: YouTube - Very bumpy landing

Think he took it a little too literally: Owch :D

I'll never like landing at City Airport. That looked like a pretty smooth landing for that place! :lol1:

Is that for real?  . i'm totally amazed that the aircraft didn't break up ,you can see the pounding the landing gear took and the wings are flapping like a birds. I know aircraft can withstand totally unbelievable stresses ,but surely landings like this must take there toll?

I have seen smoother emergency crash landings than that :lol1: .

Luminous 23 February 2008 01:54 PM

Could just be a really massive headwind :D

Yup

Its quite a recent inccident (i.e this year): According to PPRuNe it was inspected and took off a few days later

In September last year another Avro (different operator) had a heavy landing at London City....Bottomed out and hit the tail scraping all the underside causing stress cracks on the underside...that one had to be put on a pontoon and shipped down the river to be fixed.

Luminous 23 February 2008 02:09 PM

I'm staggered that plane did not break up. I dread to think what it was like inside the plane. There must have been some injuries from an impact like that.

Just imagine if you were being medi vacced home from a ski trip where you had broken you leg. That must be the last place you want to land in the world!

LOL, Several times I've spent the best part of an hour on the taxiway at that sodding airport....in a traffic jam.....of planes!

Never thought you could get gridlock at an airport :cuckoo:

FlightMan 23 February 2008 04:26 PM

Amazing the difference a strong headwind has.
We have 747's at LHR that cannot make 1000ft altitude from start of roll. Factor in a strong headwind and they're over 2500ft at the same distance.

J4CKO 23 February 2008 07:10 PM

The Avro/Bae 146 is a very strong plane, plus fairly small and kind of stocky, they are intended for short/medium routes and a lot of cycles, plus the wing is set high which helped it avoid it twatting the runway, I suspect that landing may have badly damaged some other planes, even so that is a pounding way beyond what they normally get.

I remeber talking to a pilot who flew these, a lady as well, I asked whether it was a good plane to fly in that it had four engines and wasnt that big, she said well, they are four pretty weedy engines though.

Skoobie Dhu 23 February 2008 10:45 PM

Very strong aircraft the 146, I flew twice weekly on one for two years into a 1200 metre runway with some real 5hitty weather - overhead panels dislodging themselves on landing wasn't unknown. They were designed for flying into remote airfields so were technologically simple - hence the lack of reverse thrust and the brick 5hithouse design. Apparently the undercarriage is a straight copy of the Bucaneers? Taking off into a 60 knot headwind, brakes on and full thrust at the end of the runway, with only two or three passengers made for some pretty short take offs;)

Dash 7 previously on the same route landing into a strong headwind used to stop about 20m after touching down:o

Try a Loganair Islander on Westray-Papa Westray. 2 minutes on a bad day. Shortest air service in the world :notworthy:notworthy

scunnered 24 February 2008 04:06 AM

The shortest take off/landing I've ever seen was a Fieseler Fi 156 Storch.
This aircraft was able to go so slowly that the pilot could face into a slight headwind and actually fly backwards. He was even able to land it without any forward speed. They used to be quite common at air shows.

Leslie 24 February 2008 11:46 AM

Very impressive, Scoobychick is right about the power and the high lift wings. Almost came to the hover for landing.

Les :)

Surely the Harrier jump jet is the shortest take off and landing? Afterall it goes up and comes back down in the same point.

Just being picky. :)

Yeah ,but surely vectored thrust is cheating a wee bit;)
