Transit 2.5 di wont start
 

As above,on a cold morning just will not start.Brand new battery fitted.When not cold or once van started from cold then it will start no problem,but when cold will just spin until battery runs flat,help please,ta.

are you using 'special':rolleyes: diesel that may not contain anti-waxing agents to prevent freezing conditions from waxing the diesel?

make sure the yellow coil light goes out before you start ;)

Could be the glow plugs?

does it start with a cloud of white smoke when it goes eventually? if so its glow plugs

Which 2.5 is it?

The old ones didn't have glow plugs.

If its a later one (16valve duratoq) and the glow plug light comes on; try turning the ignition on for 15secs, turn off, wat for five sec, turn on, wait 15 secs, turn off, wait 5 secs, turn on wait 15 secs...THEN try and start it. If that works defo glow plug fault.

If its a old one (8valve chugger bug) without glowplugs, get a dual battery set-up installed - its a factory extra, but should have been fitted as standard :rolleyes:...or get some easy start :D:norty:

What year is it? Isnt the old 2.5 engine fitted with a pre heat advance retard on the pump which works on a cable fitted to a waxstat? Rather than glow plugs,If so check to see if it is actually working and or check for air getting in to the fuel system, common problem on these older trannies was to suck in air at the top of the tank and around the fuel filter houseing through leaking pipes/hoses.

Its a 1995 non glow plug.Ive given it oil change today to see if that helps at all,its so frustrating,took 4 hrs to start this morning but once struck up will start all day long:mad:
Im using liquid gold and not red.
Is there an exact starting procedure ie:throttle pedal to floor or not touch throttle.
I have no idea where any of the cold start devices are so if someone could point me in the right direction it would be helpful,ta.

Hmmm '95 damn thats a cross over year on the pumps. Can't remember if that year had the immobilser chip in the key either (think that was 1996? so maybe not )

I know the older style pump, you could push a lever on the back of the pump (lower left hand side of engine block) which would manually actuate the cold start, but needs someone else to crank it while you do it, and you need a thumb of steel as it tries to push back.

Anyhoo, first thing is to make sure it has fuel (should be giving out white smoke after cranking for a bit): To be sure: loosen a couple of nuts on the pipes that feed the injectors and get someone to crank it over, should get pulses of fuel squirting out. If not, need to check the cut-out solonoid is getting a live, and there is a fuel feed to the pump
