BBC NEWS | World | Americas | Seven killed at US drag car race

Begs the question 'when is it safe to do so'

I'm not getting all high and mighty here, because that would make me a hypocrit

Witnesses told the Associated Press news agency that a crowd of about 50 people had just watched two cars speed past in the race, when another car, with no lights on, veered into spectators.

looks like theres more to it

yeah id probably wach this if i was there too, thinking it will be ok :(

stevebt 17 February 2008 12:20 AM

Is that a spelling correction, a point, or both?

I think racing on the roads is a c**t's pastime. When you're concentrating on beating the other bloke, you're not looking out for the innocent child, motorist or pedestrian that happens to get in the way of your childish games. Save it for a racetrack.

View my scooby. And if I ever speed, it's not when I'm trying to outdo some other bloke, but when I'm trying to enjoy my driving on a challenging road.

paulwrxboro 17 February 2008 01:18 AM

ok cheers

out of intrest again, whats the highest speed you have out of the scoob on the road

70mph :D

Shark Man 17 February 2008 01:21 AM

Racing on a public road is easy: its just a matter of having the bottle to go faster, brake later and generally be more of an idiot than the other person

On a track is where the gloves come off (or on, to be more precise). Although I prefer karts....in the wet :D

anthscooby01 17 February 2008 01:23 AM

'Race' can have many definitions... If u mean try to out accelerate another car up to legal limit (or thereabouts!!) on a nice straight dual carriageway in a non populated/risk free zone then YES! No harm done. If its round streets, near schools, built up areas def no!!!!

If someone pulls along side me to race most of the time i egnore them and let them go or i will boot it for about 50 to 100 yards just to say dont bother you have no chance :norty: besides its always some plank in a corsa or saxo or something crap like that who wants to have a go :cuckoo: yes it can be fun but its not worth the risk wrecking your pride & joy which you have maybe spent 1000s on, if you want to race there are plenty of drag events & track days through out the year we can all go to, its alot more fun when you are side by side on drag strip and everyone is watching you :norty: it gives you more of a buzz i think. :D ive seen plenty of people take it to far on the roads in the past cos they dont know when enough is enough, its not about bottle its more about whos the thickest, in my eyes the guy that backs off 1st when it starts getting dangerous is the winner :thumb:

Agreed...

Just come back from testing out a club 100, 100cc 2 stroke @ Rye House ...definately the most fun i've ever had on four wheels & im sorry, but the scoob doesn't even come close

hrness 17 February 2008 09:46 AM

as said above, odd race, more so when i first got the car and could not drive it.
now tends to be short drag from lights with the saxo corsa boys, i like laughing and this is a pretty easy way of doing it, well if they are stupid to offer.
less racing now i can drive the car.
tend now to have my fun on my own in very quiet times, like 0600 christmas morning.

Prasius 17 February 2008 10:41 AM

I've seen people do more stupid things in the course of their "normal" driving than I've even seen in some of the racing youtube videos....

I think very few people can honestly claim never to have had the odd "race" on the road - whatever form that might take; but of course the same bit of personal risk assessment comes into it, the same as every time you go over the posted speed limit.

andythejock01wrx 17 February 2008 12:11 PM

Well, at least I'm in the majority ! :D

One thing I would say is that a couple of times I've had wee neds try to goad me in pretty heavy traffic situations - I just let them go and play with themsleves ! ;)

wrx9181 17 February 2008 12:37 PM

pick my races in the right area against similar cars scoobys cossies evos porkas beemer and audis you get the idea
its not corsa s etc i dont understand its di!Łs in people carriers with all their familys in that always seem to act like twaŁts with me just let them alone for their own sake is it just me that atracts these middle aged nutters
most perormance car drivers hve a good respect for the road etc and the short blasts i have with them end in smiles its just a bit of fun if someones a div you can tell and just leave alone

M444GY 17 February 2008 07:33 PM

i enjoy the odd blast lol:norty:

whos the 7.5%????
