Waste gate

Iv got the turbo off my scooby at the moment and I have noticed that the waste gate flap is a little lose is this right or should it be hard up against its seat like a valve

It shouldn't be loose.

when i swapped td04 for vf35 the tdo4 valve disk you could spin slightly with your fingers and but the disk face should be flat against the hole all round imo. it had done 95k miles so spining due to age but should not have any open and close play.you may find that there is play in the pin through housing when you take waste gate arm off this will reduce closed preasure a little but slifghtly enough to keep it open a millimeter or two..

Will this have any effect on my boost when its comes in and that

if its slighty open a small amount or air will go to waste so might have slower boost time/preasure, by passing the compressor wheel depening on how open it is . should be fully closed till desired psi is reached imo. (every little helps)

my tdo5 was the same i just adjusted the wastegate rod on the locknut,if you have not got an adjustable rod you could always put a bit more bend on it just enough to close the disc tightly

The rod on the actuator has no adjustment on it so I cut it shortened it and welded a sleeve over it but I think I might be pi**ing in the wind as the shaft on the turbo has a slight bit of play in it I don’t think I will last long

try tapping or bending a little bit the plate that holds the waste gate on in a vice. had to do this on my vf35 when it arrived as it had been dropped on dilivery some how and the waste gate plate had bent so the valve was open so bent it back in the vice now its closed and fitted and sound appart fron small dent to the wastegate diaphram cover. take it off the turbo or risk craking the alloyturbo housing the plate is bolted to. just a thought
