i checked underneath the car today and the speedo cable looks like its conected , thier is a little black box just before it connects to the gearbox, looks as i imagine it should and speedos etc all still work, regards lester

Hi Lester,

If your speedo is working correctly, then im afraid you need a new speedo head assay.

The signal that the ecu is looking for is produced by a sensor on the back of the Speedo Head, which cannot be bought seperatley from the speedo.

thanks for the reply..
i forgot to mention that the car is an import so at some time has been converted to mph.. i take it the little black box could be a converter ? could this be the problem, although speedos are working correctly? regards lester

sorry mate the only think i can say now is take it to subaru, this is what the trouble code site says Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) or circuit, best of louk mate hope you get it sorted soon

Yea that box is the convertor.

If either, the speedo cable or the coverter box were at fault then the speedo itself would stop working, so if everything appears to work correctly then it has to be the small sensor in the head assay that's faulty.

The only other option is that there is a break in the wiring harness between the speedo head and Engine ECU, but this is highly unlikley!

The only cars to run a speedo cable & this type of sensor on the speedo are imports, so any secondhand replacment parts must also be from a pre 97 JDM car.

I think you'll find that code 35 is applicable to 2.0 non turbo models & the fact it is going into limp home mode indicates that it's a code 33.

no was defo 33 -- 3 long then 3 short ?
i was surprised as i expected to see knock sensor.. is the only way to get this sorted to get a whole new speedo or is the part sold seperatly ?
is thier anything else that i can check, looks secure from underneath the car will have to try and check the back of the speedo how ever i do that ? also the light only some times comes on, after a while or when i take it to/above 5000 revs after this it stays on and goes in to safe mode intill i d/c the batt for a couple of hours then is fine again for a while.....
regards...Lester
