Yes ABS is essentially super fast cadence braking except I can see snow on the road and the ABS sensors can't. A wedge of snow builds up under the front tyres and ABS locks the brakes solid when you brake. They don't pulse. It's either all or nothing then which isn't as effective as doing it manually.

Here's how the story goes,

Leave my house at 8am to head from home in Croydon to work in Epsom.

1) Get to the bottom of my road and need to turn right across two way main road (Green Lane). Nearest lane clear, pull out halfway. Wait for guy in a Cavalier to go as he doesnt stop to let me out in front of him, he was driving slowly. Lane clear so pull out and keep good distance behind Cavalier, continue down Green Lane. Get to the bend on the T Heath/Norbury border and some **** in a old Granada coming the other way spins 360 into the Cav's oncoming path!....Cav gets hit and ends up in someones front garden. Guy behind the Granada has to come into my (opposite flow) lane to avoid hitting the now stationary Granada, at the same time, i have to manouvere around the Cav and Granada.....we ALMOST collide but luckily we were both going slow enough and far enough back not to......i do not stop and continue on my journey albeit slightly shaken!. See side of Cav all smashed up very badly and Granada front end is very bent. Thank the Lord that the Cavalier didnt let me out in front of him earlier on as that would have been my car and not his!

2)Get down to the end of Green Lane and turn left onto London Road, sitting happily at a pedestrian crossing on red when on the other side of the road the poor girl in the MGF Cabrio gets shunted by a Mondeo who couldnt stop quick enough on a clear main road!!

3) Decide that i am going back home so need to go back round in a full circle (decide not to turn round and head back up Green Lane in 1) above given the incident that just happened). So i turn left off London Road into Bridgstock Rd, some woman in a Rover is driving too close behind me for comfort, decide to show her my brake lights and a select few hand gestures to indicate to her that i do not wish to get so intimate.....she realises and backs off.

4) Turn left at T Heath Tescos to head back the other way down Parchmore Road (other end to 1) above). Sensible guy in XR2 behind me keeps well back. Going down to the junction of Green Lane and can see a woman rapidly approaching a junction on the opposite side of the road, i reduce right down to almost stationary, she brakes too hard and skids and slides right out across both lanes and into my path.....then sits there ****ting her load. Luckily i have managed to stop safely and so has the guy behind. Manouvere round her and get to the bottom of my road, luckily no one coming down it the other way (given the speeds i've seen them do it this morning http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif )

5) Turn into my drive and decide that work can go to hell, i aint going in having almost had my car smashed up twice by twats who cant drive! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

See, doesnt mattter how good your Scooby is or how careful a driver you are because there are too many other ****ing idiots on the road.

These roads were all gritted last night and are main roads.!

Managed to get to work this morning, but only after spinning three times on a deserted road, just putting it into second gear, and only doing about 20mph. AWD or no AWD, 200+bhp is just too much for the snow.

Know what you mean Sunil - even here where everyone uses winter tyres, they just drive faster!

Complete sh*te - the tyres give better grip in snow as long as you stay within their limits. Once locked up they may as well be slicks!

I tried the car this morning, 235 tyres and 280BHP don't mix with snow, did a few spins in the supermarket carpark just for kicks, went home and caught the train.

Is there a way to disable ABS though? I hate it in the snow, it's like having no brakes at all.

No i was not going to stop because

2) He looked ok (i.e he wasnt slumped unconcious over his steering wheel, neither was his head poking out of his windscreen)

3) Couple 2) with the fact that the road conditions would not allow me to stop nearby anyhow (long bend with parked cars all along)

4) There were several pedestrians who could also act as witnesses

5) I did not want my car shunted by some rubber-necker.

Most upset this morning.

Driving along a gritted A41 dual carriageway on the way to work, I decided to change lanes in order to turn right at the up and coming roundabout. Even with grit there was still ice on the road so I thought sub 20mph would be okay. But no, the car thinks it wise to change ends (235s and 300bhp ( http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif to chuck) do not mix). I manage to catch it and snake for a while but it scares the **** out of me.
I continue at around 15mph for the rest of my journey. Then some w*nker in a blue escort drives up my arse for the next two miles waving his hands gesturing very impolitely that I speed up!!! Curse the bloody 22B as there was no way he could see through my tinted rear window what my hand signals were in return.

You should have seen his face when I turned left down a road with no overtaking opportunities that he wanted to go down. Since it was a roundabout, I thought it better to do a 450 and let him go ahead.

Is it wrong to hope someone has a minor dink in order to teach them a lesson????

I understand how you feel Adam, on the M1 this morning there were only 2 lanes and I was in the 2nd. I was doing 60 where as some other complete pricks were doing 80-90 in the Snow http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif Some prat in a Vectra was on my backside for 3-4 miles and began to flash me until I let a HUGE artic in the 2nd lane and we were doing 50 for 10 miles http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

.....3" of snow on untreated roads at 06:30 - Mr Polo nobhead behind decides he is faster than Carolyn and my Scoobs (probably true!!) - tailgates Carolyn for a while so she indicates to let him past then gives him 440w of Mr PIAA's finest. He catches me up next so I pull over and let him past and give him my 440w of PIAA for the next 1/4 mile - hee hee - silly I know but made me feel better (anyway serves him right cos his rear fog was blinding me).

Get up the road another 400 yds and can see his tyre tracks in the snow where he has gone into a downhill bend too fast, mounted the pavement, stopped 3 feet short of a house, reversed off and carried on!!

Get a bit further and looks like he has made two excursions up the roadside banks - when will they ever learn??

Couldn't agree more chaps - It was d*ckhead central out there this morning (see my post on the other 'snow' thread). Sunil don't know what it was like on your side of Croydon, but none of the roads were gritted around my way - it was a complete joke. I ain't leaving the house again until they have salted the roads..

So, picture this. I did Wetter the Better 2 weeks ago in anticipation of this fine weather. RE010's with reasonable tread left. Got the car started this morning, and went to go out. Untreated road with packed snow on right hand turn. Idle in first (could not go any slower), back steps out and hits kerb. First dint in the alloy. Turn around and go home for a sulk.

Now, the snow has partially melted and will freeze tonight. Be safe out there. Really, is the journey worth it?

KF; with you on that one. Took mine out this morning, turned right at the end of my close onto hardpack, and slid and bounced off the kerb with both left wheels.

As I've only just got it back after two months, and one of those wheels is (was) brand new, my sulk was of particularly high intensity.

And for you lot on the other thread talking about sliding it round empty car parks; I am puce green with envy. None round here!

Still a bit miserable (but brightening up when I read of the stories of other loonies)...BJH
