spotlights onto HID wired stiv7

I am trying to wire up spotlights to come on with main beam and off with dip lights. the car used to have hid lights on,i have fitted normal lights which work ok.
the spots are on all the time even if the main lights are on or off. they seem to be getting some sort of feed from somewhere. have spoken to a few people in the know and they mention diodes?

Any help would be great

The feeds to the dip and main are live, to switch them on a relay pulls them down to earth (0v)... you may need a relay wired so that when main beam goes off the relay switches the spots off too. A changeover relay (5 pin) can be used to switch "backwards". i.e +12v = OFF, 0v = ON !

thanks for that, i have wired it "backwards" and it works when the lights are turned on but when turned off they are getting a feed from somwhere and the spots stay on no matter what you do.

We need more info on how you've wired it now. Are you using a relay for example? Dunx has got it right I'm sure, your problem is to do with the odd way subaru work the wiring to the lights ie permanent 12v to one side and switch the other side to earth to bring the lights on.

Without a relay you need to feed permanent 12v to one side of the spotlight and connect the other side to the switched side of the main beam. This is red on newage cars. You can tell which side this is by disconnecting both main beam bulbs from the wiring (important) and seeing which side of the wiring has 12v on. You need to connect your spotlight to the other side which will be floating with the lights switched off and earthed with the lights switched on.

With a relay you need permanent 12v to one side of the coil (85) and one side of the switch (30), connect the switch output (87) to one side of the spotlight and the other side of the spotlights to earth, finally connect the other side of the coil (86) to the switched side of the main beam as above.

hello again, i am using a relay. and have wired like this:
live wire from batt through a fuse to spots
neg from batt to relay switch
other side of relay switch to neg on spots
live from batt to relay coil
other side of relay coil to neg switched wire that feeds main beam light.

all works ok when turned on but whenyou turn the headlights off the spots remain on.
the stay on with ignition turned off or on.(normally turns everything off)
iff you start unplugging the headlights everything needs to be disconnected at both sides before the spots go off.

the car did have standard hid lights fitted and i have been told that there must be some sort of back feeding going on and may need to fit a diode in the loom ????

> live from batt to relay coil

Try connecting the relay coil live side to the other side (the 12V live side) of the main beam light. That means the two main beam lights and the spotlight relay coil are all three in parallel.

I suspect that what's happening is that, with the ignition off, the permanent 12V on the live side of the main beam light disappears. This gives you 12V on one side of the relay coil direct from the battery and the other side, which normally has permanent 12V on, is earthed through some other part of the shutdown loom. The relay then comes on.

I'm having exactly the same problem here too, If I can get it figured I'll let you know. *goes off scratching head*

thanks but i have tried that and it works just the same!

Chelspeed 21 January 2008 12:14 PM

If you've got the relay coil wired up in parallel with the main beam bulb then it would seem to me to be impossible for the relay to come on without the main beam bulb coming on.

Last thing I can think of is to check the wiring to the relay. Are the four relay connections on the right terminals? There are type a and type b relays which have the four terminals in different locations. You aren't using a type a wiring diagram with a type b relay or vicky verky are you?

Other than that I give up. You've stumped me.

the relay is defo right.
i am baffled too i have had an auto electrician at it and he is baffled.
must be getting a feed for the earth from somewhere.

Found this online after much searching. Does it look right?

I'm going to try it once i've picked up another relay

Trigger relay (20 Amp 4 blade type)
-------------
Terminal 85 (trigger) to headlamp main beam (see notes below for connection details)
Terminal 86 (trigger earth) to earth mounting on bracket bolt
Terminal 30 (switched input) to existing fog lamp socket (see notes below for connection details)
Terminal 87 (switched output) to terminal 85 of main relay

Main relay (30 Amp 5 blade twin make and break type)
----------
Terminal 85 (trigger) to terminal 87 of trigger relay
Terminal 86 (trigger earth) to earth mounting on bracket bolt
Terminal 30 (switched input) to splash proof fuse holder output
Terminal 87 (switched output) to right driving lamp
Terminal 87 (switched output) to left driving lamp
