Damn it - just got ripped off on ebay :-(

D'oh, another ebay scam - this time it's my turn. I was just starting to trust ebay having had a good number of successful transactions and probably got careless. The story...

I wanted tickets to the snooker final at wembley this sunday and back in November, there were tickets on ebay for similar money to Ticketmaster but nearer the front. I found a seller with a few tickets, it looked like he had bought six in a row and was reselling in pairs to turn a small profit. He had previously sold tickets for quite a few different events and had a good feedback profile in excess of 300. One pair of tickets had already sold, one was on a buy it now and the other pair open auction. I was about to get the buy it now tickets and someone beat me to it. I contacted the seller and asked if he would close his other auction early and sell at the same price as the buy it now tickets which he agreed. He sent me a paypal invoice detailing the ticket numbers, the ebay auction number and gave me his mobile no. and forwarded his ticketmaster booking details as proof he had the tickets on order. He marked the auction on ebay as closed early due item no longer available which I should have known was dodgy with hindsight. He didn't add an official "buy it now" to the page for me to use.

So now it is pretty near the event, I know ticketmaster have sent out the tickets to other people and I have heard nothing from the seller. He doesn't reply to e-mail and the phone is not answered. I check out ebay to see if he is still active etc and he has a load of auctions going, including one which recently ended where he has resold the very same seat numbers at the snooker that I paid him for.

THe transaction didn't technically go through ebay so they don't want to know and 45 days have elapsed since I used paypal so they don't want to know.

What can I do apart from learn the hard way? Anyway to locate him from the following if any of it is true?

Ebay name: neil_tilley, from chigwell, essex. Phone number supposedly 07709 446 433, email: neil_tilley@hotmail.com

Item number (sold to me) 290185335444
Item number (when he resold same tickets) 290197189955

I'd print out all the information you have and go to the police. I bet after a call from them he suddenly remembers he forgot to refund you.

did you buy outside of ebay?

Unfortunately I did buy outside ebay. I'll contact them anyway but doubt they will do much.

As for the police? It would be nice to go to them but I have only been done for £88 which I gave voluntarily to someone I have never met. Are they going to take me seriously?

sorry only glanced through his initial post.

email him and point him to this thread and also point him in the direction of the hightee butzlaff thread so he knows what going to happen to him :D presuming you do that and he reads this, (you better get the tickets or send the cash back, or your in deep do dos) :D

You could try sending him an invoice for refund for £88... on paypal...

I would call Paypal directly and see if they can help... could be a long phone call though

The police should take you serious as you have a contract to buy(A copy of the invoice from scammer) the tickets( the goods) and you have paid for the goods but not received them.

Tidgy 15 January 2008 04:01 PM

paypal will prob, should have locked his account, its against the rules to sell tickets not in possesion of the seeler.

i fell foul of this sorting funds out for a stand at japshow, and that was legit

StickyMicky 15 January 2008 04:03 PM

sorry, but i stopped reading after "tickets"

Tiggs 15 January 2008 04:07 PM

what is it with people and their belife that ebay is the company you are dealing with?

ebay is the medium to buy the second hand item (yes it has systems in place but if you treat it as the newsagents shop window then you cant go wrong)

and....in this case you didnt even use ebay - your posts sould be "ripped of by a tout" its as much to do with ebay as it is waitrose!

Strangely Neil D Tilley of Chigwell disappeared from the electoral roll in 2007. He is registered on the 2002-2006 electoral rolls and then seems to have disappeared from the UK.

There is only one Neil D Tilley in the UK!

Says he's a student, probably just trying to make a quick buck like Helga or whatever her name is!!
