you have to remove all the plastic trim from up the posts also, 3 clips also under the shelf, it's a pig

If you can fit your speakers from below, that's likely the "potentially least destructive" way. The shelf is made of hardboard type crap and is often stuck to the rear windscreen bonding too (partially, accidentally).

There's a post over on Impreza Sport about how one guy did it. You definitely need mounts or something to space fill as the underside of the shelf is far from smooth. IMO you need thick MDF rings or you risk distorting the speaker frame when you mount it.

I used lots of no-more-nails and a few screws to hold those in.

im halfway to destructing the whole thing but the less destructive option was stupidly thrown out the window a while back

I've just read you original post, and am unsure as to what it is you are trying to do?

If it's remove the cloth covered hardboard shelf, you have to lift it clear of the clips, which are near the speaker holes, then pull it outwards. As stated, it can be badly stuck in with windscreen sealant;)

If, however, you are trying to remove the METAL that's under that shelf, I don't think it's meant to come out. Mine, in a '98 car, was certainly welded in, and supports the rear screen.

I've got 6x9's fitted from above in home made mdf spacers, covered in black parcel shelf material from an ICE dealer.
